Navy People: Service with a smile
25 November 2010
Renmark’s Amy McMutrie, 22, now wears the uniform of the Royal Australian Navy and it’s brought her more memorable experiences than she can poke a stick at.
Amy joined the Navy in 2007 and, after basic training at HMAS Cerberus, decided to specialise as a steward.
Now Amy has been promoted to Able Seaman, holds a certificate 3 in hospitality, and is responsible for cabin and table service in HMAS Success’ wardroom.
Amy has good reason to smile. During her time onboard Success she has been to Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Most of these visits have involved official functions in which Amy managed the bar and food service.
But there’s more to Amy’s job than entertaining VIPs and diplomats. One of Amy’s most important roles on the ship is as a member of the ship’s medical emergency team, responding to any incident that occurs onboard.
Success recently rescued an Indonesian fisherman that had been in the water for three days and Amy was responsible for his initial medical treatment.
“It was a challenge trying to communicate with him,” said Amy. “I had to use hand signals, maps and drawings to find out his story and help him.”
“Success has been great but now I’m hoping to work towards the management side of hospitality, and get a Navy recruitment role in South Australia. It will be great being that bit nearer home.”
