After seven years attending the Australian Naval Cadets at Training Ship Perth, Fremantle’s Tanisha Tyler-Greaves, 20, decided to take the plunge. She joined the Navy as a Maritime Warfare Officer.

Tanisha completed high school at Como Secondary College in 2007 and then went onto working as a deckhand for the former Oceanic Cruises, working between Perth to Rottnest Island.

Tanisha has just completed five months of training at HMAS Creswell, graduating form the Royal Australian Naval College on 2 December, ready to start the next part of her naval training.

During her five months at HMAS Creswell, Tanisha has been able to gain experience in everything from survival at sea to boat work, leak stop and repair, firefighting and weapons training.

“The best thing about the training is the variety. I particularly enjoyed the practical aspects.”

“I am now looking forward to moving on from the training we have done here at Creswell, to the next part of my training at HMAS Watson in Sydney. This is where I will be able to really start learning and practicing my job as a Maritime Warfare Officer in the navy.

“Once I have completed my training, I would really like to specialise in Navigation and as a Principle Warfare Officer, but that’s a bit of a way off yet. I’m just really looking forward to getting out to sea.

“Like all the trainees, I had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to embark in HMNZS Canterbury. It was such a great experience to be able to work with the New Zealand crew and learn how their ships operate. It was fantastic to be out at sea.

“Our training also involved leadership exercises and activities, which is the basis of our officer training at Creswell. We were taught how to manage teams of people using our own leadership styles to achieve set tasks,” Tanisha said.

At the beginning of 2011, Tanisha will begin her training as a Maritime Warfare Officer at HMAS Watson, Watsons Bay, Sydney. As a trainee Maritime Warfare Officer, Tanisha will learn how to navigate a ship and manage the bridge team as the Commanding Officer’s representative.

Before beginning the next part of her training, Tanisha is heading home to Fremantle for the Christmas break, surfing, catching up with friends and especially, catching up with her little brother, Travis Mathews.
