Now a trainee electronics technician, Jacob is on Tobruk for two months to further his training.

“It’s the first time I’ve been out of Australia!” Jacob said.

“It’s good going out to sea with friends that I haven’t seen since recruit school, and then going ashore with them in different countries,” he said.

“I’ve also enjoyed learning new things about other countries and their cultures.”

Jacob worked for Donaldson Meats at Caboolture Park Shopping Centre after leaving school, but decided he wanted a trade.

“My boss, Michael Donaldson, was ex-Navy and he was always talking about it, so I thought I would check it out,” he said.

“So now I’m earning a lot more money, travelling, earning new qualifications and making lots of friends.

“It’s easily the best job I’ve ever had.”

Jacob will be posted to the Anzac Class frigate HMAS Ballarat early next year.

Jacob was recently in Malaysia for Exercise Bersama Padu 2010, which means “together united” in Malaysian. It’s a three-week exercise designed to enhance regional stability.

The exercise is part of the Five Power Defence Arrangements and took place at various locations across Malaysia and in the South China Sea.
