Although he has just turned 18, Korey has already experienced several highlights in his naval career.

“I really enjoyed the helicopter underwater escape training at HMAS Albatross at Nowra,” he said.

“It’s not something the average person gets to do and I liked the practicality of it.

“Then to get a deployment to South East Asia straight afterwards was pretty special too.”

He spent his 18th birthday on duty onboard HMAS Tobruk in Singapore.

“Í had to work on my birthday, but I went out with my mates a few nights earlier and had a really good time,” he said.

Next stop for Korey is an electrical engineering degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra, starting early next year.

“When I graduate I want to be a weapons electrical engineer on one of the new Air Warfare Destroyers,” he said.

“It will have a whole new range of weapons and electronic devices and be a real step up in technology. It will be a new cool piece of kit!”

Tobruk visited Malaysia as part of Exercise Bersama Padu, a three-week exercise designed to enhance regional stability. It’s part of the Five Power Defence Arrangements and took place at various locations across Malaysia and in the South China Sea.
