Navy People: Under the Navy Ensign
11 October 2010
Southport’s Jahzinta Clarke used to wear the red, white and blue at Palm Beach Currumbin High School. Now she’s under the red, white and blue of a different kind. She’s an Able Seaman in the Royal Australian Navy.
“By Year 11 at Palm Beach I’d narrowed my future down to public affairs or Navy,” said Jahzinta, now 20.
“Within three months of leaving school I had said goodbye to my family and friends, and had started basic training at HMAS Cerberus near Melbourne.
“Before entering the Navy you have to do an aptitude test, and then choose from the jobs that best suit you. I’ve now specialised as a Cryptologic Technical Signals Analyst — which means codes and communications.
“I’ve been in three years next February and I love it. In that time I’ve got to meet lots of people, travelled heaps and made life long friends.
“Now I’ve just been posted to HMAS Albatross shore station at Nowra, South coast NSW. I am looking forward to getting some actual sea-time under my belt soon so I’m pretty excited.”
