Navy People: Winter up Top

22 November 2010

Elizabeth South sailor Kym Van Wetering suffered less than most this winter, mainly because he is now enjoying the tropical lifestyle of Cairns. But it wasn’t as hot as Baghdad.

The Elizabeth Boys Technology High School graduate joined the Royal Australian Navy 35 years ago after working at the AMPOL petrol station on Main North Rd.

“My mate from school convinced me, and I wanted to give it a go,” said Kym.

“After basic training I specialized in admin — what the Navy calls a writer.” While Kym was on the course he met his wife Sue, to whom he has now been married for 25 years.

Then Kym started seeing the world. He was part of HMAS Hobart (II)'s world trip in 1976 which included celebrating the Bicentennial of Independence in New York. He’s been peacekeeping in Bougainville and aboard HMAS Manoora on active service in the Gulf of Oman.

In 2005-06 Kym was in Baghdad at the Headquarters of the Australian Joint Task Force. Kym might still say it was the highlight of his career but over the years his exceptional service has been rewarded with three ADF Commendations and a 2010 Australia Day Medal, on top of his active service medals.

The Elizabeth South man was also the first sailor trustee ever appointed by the Minister of Defence for the Navy’s Relief Trust Fund.

“The Navy is a good secure job as long as you work hard,” said Kym. “It is family-orientated and can be very rewarding both personally and financially. Whether you make it a short career, or stay in as long as me, it’s worth it.”
