Navy forms a human chain to mark White Ribbon Day
25 November 2009
Members of the Royal Australian Navy have come together on both sides of the country, in a symbolic show of support for women on White Ribbon Day.
In eastern Australia, crew members of HMAS Kanimbla joined to form a human White Ribbon alongside at Fleet Base East, Garden Island. Not to be outdone in Western Australia, members of the Anzac frigate HMAS Warramunga did the same, at Fleet Base West at HMAS Stirling.
"Navy is proud to be a supporter of White Ribbon Day and an advocate of women's rights. All women have the right to feel safe and be treated with dignity and respect. This view underpins our equity and diversity policies and is fundamental to our culture," said Head of Navy People and Reputation, Commodore David Letts.
Navy members are taking part in other smaller White Ribbon day events across the country.
The White Ribbon Foundation of Australia aims to eliminate violence against women by promoting culture-change around the issue.
