Newcastle's NZ Wonderland
27 August 2008
Fine weather and friendly hosts welcomed HMAS Newcastle to windy Wellington during the ship's first visit to the New Zealand capital.
The three-day port visit, part of a south-west Pacific deployment, gave the ship's company an opportunity to take in the many attractions the city and surrounding areas had to offer — everything from the modern Te Papa museum and the array of quality cafés and restaurants, to activities further afield.
Commanding Officer CMDR Nick Stoker has said the aim of the deployment is to build on the strong relationships with our regional neighbours and provide rest and relaxation for the crew.
Newcastle played host to a cocktail party on the first evening, including the traditional Ceremonial Sunset under the command of SBLT McKeen.
The function was well attended by local officials including the Royal New Zealand Service chiefs and the Australian High Commissioner.
The ship's petty officers made the most of the cultural surrounds with a mess function at "Kai on the City" which featured traditional Maori food, dance and culture.
The Newcastle Golf Club was also active, with members playing both Miramar Links and Shandon Golf Club courses. ABMT John Haviland scored an eagle, holing out from 150m.
Many of the ship's company travelled inland in search of snow and other unique New Zealand adventures.
