On their bikes for safety

With a thunderous roar, HMAS Stirling transformed from peaceful island to an impressive display of metal, when 300 motorbike riders took to the causeway recently.

The ride, organised by the Western Australian Police with the help of WOETSM Carl Larkin, was aimed at promoting safe riding techniques and building relationships between riders, police and Navy.

Led by the Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Operations, John McRoberts, the ride took the group from Perth's Burswood Casino, down to Garden Island and back, some 63kms.

"The event is all about awareness," Mr McRoberts said. "It's about riding defensively and about sharing experiences with people who've been riding motorcycles for a long time. But most importantly it's an opportunity for members of the public to interact with police officers, and it gives my people the chance to share some knowledge ... and hopefully reduce road trauma."

Riders enjoyed lunch at Camp Markham on Garden Island, and received a brief on the responsibilities of looking after learner riders.

Among the group was POCIS Paul Francis, co-ordinator for the Defence Motorcycle Association in Western Australia.

"After looking after some safety lectures and rides on Garden Island last year, I decided to get involved in the ride this year, and took my wife and 19-year-old son with me," PO Francis said.

With a large group of motorcycle riders within Defence, PO Francis said it was important for all riders, including scooter riders, to familiarise themselves with advanced riding techniques.

"The courses involve classroom work, road work and circuit work, designed to increase safety awareness. They look at corners and breaking, as well as things such as how to position yourself on the road, what to look for and what the dangers are."
