Parramatta Calls at Diego Garcia
6 April 2010
The first stop for HMAS Parramatta since leaving Australia occurred recently, when the crew had the opportunity to spend a few hours on the soil of Diego Garcia. From the sea, it is a low strip of sand that gives way to lush green mix of palms and thick foliage. The exposed rim of an extinct volcano is home to a military airbase, approximately 2000 people and a small township devoted to supporting numerous ships and aircraft that visit Diego Garcia.
The week leading up to the arrival ranged from glassy seas, to leaden skies, howling winds and white peaks thanks to the looming Tropical Cyclone Imani. However, brilliant sunshine welcomed Parramatta as we made our way through a narrow channel and into the peaceful lagoon that is the heart of Diego Garcia. After berthing alongside and getting the usual services connected, the crew formed up on the flight deck to acknowledge promotions, awards and milestones of some members of Ships company.
On the pipe of leave, the Ship’s company used the afternoon to explore the island and do some shopping in the local PX Store, get a haircut, call loved ones and sample the local cuisine. The tropical heat made a game of soccer (Parramatta Stokers vs The Rest) a challenging enterprise and it was an upbeat group that made their way to the cool waters of the lagoon to watch the sun set. An enjoyable night then followed at the nearby ‘British Club’ where a warm welcome was provided to the Australian visitors on their overnight stay.
Parramatta sailed the following morning to continue her transit to the MEAO where she will relieve HMAS Stuart and commence operations in support of OP SLIPPER.
