Parramatta answers 'Call of Duty'
15 March 2010
The departure by HMAS Parramatta (CMDR Heath Robertson) from Sydney’s Fleet Base East to Op Slipper speaks volumes of the commitment by Navy and its dedicated personnel to answering “the call of duty”.
Parramatta’s ships’ company includes several senior sailors making their third or more deployment to the MEAO and many junior sailors on their first deployment, who left behind pregnant wives and new born babies.
Her resilient and resolute crew includes CPO James Weber, who is making his sixth deployment to the MEAO, and SWO Steve Downey, who is on his second deployment in as many years.
CPO Weber, a stoker in Parramatta’s propulsion department, has been on nine operational deployments, which has seen him at sea for roughly 14 1/2 years of the 18 years he has served in the RAN.
WO Downey told Navy News he is “happy to answer the call duty for Navy but farewelling the family is always sad.”
Parramatta’s crew also features several Officers and sailors making their first deployment to the MEAO, including LEUT James Bardot, LSBM Simon Bennett, and ABET Troy Eastwell, who left behind pregnant wives or young babies.
ABET Eastwell farewelled his wife, Kim, who is six months pregnant, knowing that he is in for an unforgettable homecoming in six months time, when he meets his son or daughter for the first time.
More than 300 Navy top brass, as well as family and friends, bid Parramatta farewell when left departed FBE, on 15 March, to replace HMAS Stuart on Op Slipper.
The Anzac class FFH was also farewelled by Chief of Navy, VADM Russ Crane, AO, CSM, and COMAUSFLT, RADM Steve Gilmore, who praised the sailors for their dedication to duty and their families for supporting their Navy service.
CMDR Robertson said Parramatta is well prepared and ready for the important job before them.
“I congratulate the Ship’s Company for their commitment in building upon the outstanding reputation of the ADF in the Middle East,” he said.
CMDR Robertson said Parramatta’s deployment forms an important part of the ADF’s contribution to the international campaign against terrorism, countering piracy in the Gulf of Aden, and maritime security.
“During this six month deployment Parramatta will also help provide maritime security in the Gulf and help promote regional stability,” he said.
