Perfect match - Navy and Australian Surf Rowing League
4 December 2010
The gloomy weather didn’t put off the 24 crews from across the nation who battled it out at the Navy Australian Team Selection Regatta at Stockton Beach, Newcastle this morning.
The regatta saw 12 crews from NSW, 4 from QLD, 1 from both SA and Tasmania, 4 from Victoria and 2 from WA compete for the opportunity to be part of the 17 member Australian team, which will compete in the International Surf Rescue Challenge at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, from 29 January to 4 February 2011.
While the surf wasn't huge, the competition was pretty demanding, with a few thrills and spills to keep the competitors on their game.
While the crews took to the water, Navy's presence as the naming rights sponsor couldn't be missed, with members of HMAS Newcastle's ship's company playing frisbee with kids and demonstrating the value of teamwork.
As the morning whittled down the competitors, the top 5 crews challenging in the Open category had a final hit out and were finally pared down to the top three, Currumbin and North Cliff from QLD and Whale Beach from NSW.
In the Under 23's, Dee Why from NSW and North Cliff, QLD came top of the table on equal points.
The teams will have to wait till early next week to find out who has made the cut, with an announcement from Surf Life Saving Australia expected on Tuesday.
