Publication:Navy Annual 2005/RAN Logistic Support - Middle East
BY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER PIET JONKER, RAN.
The Navy's longest serving operational unit overseas is also one of the ADF's least known. The Logistic Support element - Middle east (LSe-Me) has been based in the Middle east since the first Gulf War to provide logistic support and resources to sustain RAN units and detachments on operational assignment to the Middle east Area of Operations.
This small, dedicated team provides a wide range of support services from meeting personnel and medical needs to arranging Replenishments at Sea to organising shore respite for Ships' companies and everything in between. The Unit's motto 'Absolutely Anything Anywhere' is put into practical use daily.
The Unit's long term accomplishments are based on its flexibility and the ability to adjust rapidly to the changing operational requirement of those supported. Key to this ability has been the freedom afforded to the Unit's Commander to make operational decisions in the field, ensuring that necessary support is provided when and where needed. This operational focus and delegation of responsibilities ensured that a high level of cost effective support has been maintained over the years.
The operating environment and ability to achieve satisfactory outcomes also rest on the Unit's ability to closely coordinate requirements with allied military forces. Similarly, the forging of good relations with local authorities and businesses across a number of countries and cultures are also essential support building blocks in the turbulence of local conditions.
The LSE-Me has supported a great number of ships and personnel since its inception, and the Unit has seen its composition and location change several times over the years. Numerous naval personnel have served as valued members of the LSE-Me, assisting deployed units and detachments, and many more may do so over the ensuing years.
"The backbone of any organisation is its people, and the Navy is proud of those who have served in the LSE-Me and their achievements" said LCDR Piet Jonker, RAN.
For as long as there is a requirement for operational support in the Middle east Area of Operations, the members of the LSE-Me will work quietly in the background to support those deployed.
