Future Environmental Trends to 2020:
Impact on Ship Design and Operation

edited by Glenn Kerr and Barry Sunshall, 2005

Abstract

This volume publishes a report commissioned from the Centre for Maritime Policy at the University of Wollongong; to provide the RAN with a strategic assessment of trends in international and domestic environmental law, policy and standards from 2005-20, and explain how these may impact future ship design and naval operation. The report examined:

  • The variety of international instruments and Australian domestic legislation on environmental issues to determine how they impact RAN operations and the degree such operations comply with the environmental requirements.
  • Future trends in environmental policy and legislation that may affect RAN operations; providing a broad overview of the likely changes in policy, options to be considered to adapt to these trends and defines constraints on how these changes may influence the way the RAN conducts business.
  • The concept of the environmentally compliant warship; developments being undertaken around the world to achieve the design of such a ship are reviewed and applications for the RAN are assessed.

The contributing authors of the report were: Martin Tsamenyi, Stuart Kaye, Greg Rose, Barry Snushall, Cameron Moore, Kwame Mfodwo and Linda Munoz.
