Abstract

Originally titled Australian Carrier Decisions: Three Descriptive Analyses, this three part study was written between 1977 and 1978 by Dr Anthony Wright, Principal Research Officer in the then Historical, Studies and Information Section, of the Department of Defence. It was written in the midst of debate on a replacement for the RAN’s sole aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne, but before any final decision had been reached. The only change made to the scope of the original work was the inclusion of a Part IV chronology of the major milestones associated with the ultimately aborted replacement project.
