Publication:Sea Talk Autumn 2008/‘Do your five-year career plan’ urges new DSCM

By Billie Peresin, Staff Officer for DSCM.

In January DSCM farewelled CAPT Michael Noonan, who has now officially handed over the reins to former Commanding Officer HMAS Kanimbla, CAPT Jay Bannister.

CAPT Bannister is continuing the great work done with the Five Year Career Plan (FYCP) and strongly encourages all members that do not yet have a FYCP to submit one.

“Sailors now have a cohesive career management plan for the future which gives them and their families a greater sense of direction,” he said.

Currently all recruits posting out of HMAS Cerberus are submitting a FYCP prior to departure.

The roll out from warrant officer to leading seaman was very successful last year and a signal will be released shortly initiating the FYCP for able seaman (AB) to seaman (SMN) level.

A FYCP is a great way for sailors and their families to plan for the next five years. The FYCP is also negotiable should an individual’s circumstances change during that time and also considers achievement of personal and professional goals.

You can help us here in Career Management by completing one of the following actions:

a. fill out an online FYCP by going to: http//intranet.defence.gov.au/navyweb/sites/DSCM;

b. contact your DSCM Career Management Centre; or

c. visit your Local Career Management Centre and discuss with your career manager.

Last year also saw the start of the Regional Career Management Centre (RCMC), responsible for career management in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Queensland and South Australia.

The RCMC is now fully staffed and the new career managers are fast coming up to speed with all that career management entails. There may be a few personnel changes in the next few months but the quality of service will be consistent throughout the cell.

The RCMC is looking forward to working with all sailors to assist them in making the most of their career choices and provide an excellent opportunity for all sailors to have face-to-face contact with their career managers.
