Publication:Sea Talk Summer 2005/Renata recognition from Systems Commander
By Annie Casey
Navy Systems Commander Commodore Geoff Geraghty paid tribute to the exemplary efforts of graphic artist Renata Tacadena at the Navy Video Unit (NVU), Garden Island Sydney.
The Systems Command Commendation recognised the initiative and professionalism Renata has demonstrated in her development of a new role in NVU.
With a background in Photoshop and print design she has learnt and perfected the skills of encoding, menu design, DVD burning plus cover and disc composition. The professional quality of these DVD products has led to a sharp increase in product demand.
On receiving the commendation Renata said: " I feel both honoured and appreciated - that my work is being recognised. It's important to keep up with technology and aim to achieve as high a professional presentation as possible."
The NVU's core activity is to produce highly specialised DVDs for Navy Training.
Renata is responsible for all the "behind the scenes" skills entailed in packaging training material on DVD.
In the last three years over 6,000 DVDs have been distributed compared to 200 annually with VHS tape cassettes. The DVDs are readily taken up and now reach a wider Defence audience.
Distribution includes the Defence Safety Management Agency, Defence libraries and Navy wide - including shore establishments - with regular screenings onboard ships, prior to a feature movie.
Officer-in-Charge of NVU Jon Sarvis said: "Single handedly, Renata has successfully marketed a product which previously was grossly under utilised. The product incorporates viewer friendly menu design together with artistic and informative DVD cover design."
Another exceptional and important task for Renata was to provide DVDs in the current Sea King Board of Inquiry. She manufactured and labelled 1110 DVDs - a massive and difficult task involving sensitive subject matter under tight timeframes demonstrating her commitment and ability to work under pressure.
