The Australian Hydrographic Service recently successfully completed a pilot program in conjunction with Defence Training.

A module of the Diploma in Government Course, the program was called the "Management Matters Managed Program" and ran over a 10-week period.

It was divided into two elements, management and leadership. The program aims were to refine, develop and recognise public sector management and leadership skills.

It dealt with a range of theoretical and practical skills needed by managers and leaders in the public sector.

To achieve this it looked at a range of issues, including the ethical and legal basis of public service, the development of workplace leadership, resource coordination, research and workgroups, providing and evaluating client services, and workplace safety.

Two groups, made up of senior to middle management staff from both the APS and the RAN attended.

Some of the students are continuing with workplace assessments and TAFE-based electives to complete the Diploma in Government.
