The Clubber's Corner

Toowoomba's immense drive for sport and physical training during the first patrol has been revealed by way of class participation, gym attendance, and team game involve-ment. The crew's fitness regime started with a massive leap and bound, and most people are well on their way to achieving their personal goals.

The first patrol was fitness packed, with two daily PT sessions, Biggest Loser testing and weigh-ins, team challenges and for the not so physical - a kite flying competition.

Physical Training Classes

At 0615-0700 and then again at 1615-1700, several of Toowoomba's fitness crazy members are working hard, sweating their butts off, smashing out 50 push ups or running laps of the flight deck by taking part in the intense physical training sessions conducted onboard daily. The sessions vary from boxercise and cardio sessions to weights circuits, team games and stretching. The sessions have consistently had a high number of participants throughout the patrol, with approximately 25-35 personnel attending each session at one time. If we keep these numbers up, we'll be the fittest ship in the fleet. Go FEARLESS!

Biggest Loser OP SLIPPER Challenge

This has been set to help several crew members improve health, gain fitness, lose weight, and enjoy the sense of achievement of attaining their personal goals. The challenge began on the 17th of June and will continue until the last port visit of the deployment. During this time there will be:

  • PT training sessions
  • Diet and exercise education
  • Guidance to help achieve the goals they're aiming for, and
  • Port visit weigh-ins.

The initial weigh-in was conducted in Diego Garcia, where the total of all the Biggest Loser nominees came to 2449kg. The Biggest Loser team members are working towards a total weight loss goal of 228kg by the end of the trip. The Biggest Loser Meter (BLM) now stands at 2392 kg after the Muscat visit weigh-in. Stay tuned for our next sports report for another update on the BLM.

The BL from Abu Dhabi's weigh-in was ABSTD Jonathan Coleman who lost 4kg, which is 4.9% of his original body weight. Not far behind was ABCK Scott Tysoe, who lost a massive 4.5kg, which is 4.1% of his original body weight. Way to go Johno and Tysoe.

The BL winner from Muscat was ABCK Tysoe, with a weight loss of 7.5kg. This calculates to 7.73% of his previous weigh-in weight in Abu Dhabi.

A little birdie told me Tysoe wakes up at 0230 every morning to get to the gym by 0300, trains for 1.5-2 hours before work. He may go again later in the day but, only if the cooks aren't too busy. That's dedication.
