I work as a freelance cameraman, an Australian based in China. A couple of months back I got a call from an Australian Film company making a documentary – 'Warship', a series based on HMAS Toowoomba's current deployment to OP SLIPPER.

For someone who has never been to sea before and knows nothing of Navy life it was a unique opportunity. So for the past six weeks, I have spent my time with the crew of Australian warship 156.

Because of my role on board, I was in a unique position to wander the ship, to access all the different work areas, top to bottom. With the encouragement of people from all ranks and departments, I spent my time filming and learning what people did, from engine room to bridge. It was an opportunity to learn about different aspects of life onboard from all perspectives.

I've enjoyed my time in Toowoomba. For me this has been new and interesting. Tramping around a ship with a camera can be intrusive and takes up valuable real estate when people are trying to do a job. This is my opportunity to thank all those on board Toowoomba who pulled me in and gave me friendship and the space to do my job.

Yours aye,
Jon Matthews
