There are 91 Australian Naval Cadet units around the coun-try, HMAS Toowoomba is proud to be affiliated with two of these units, TS Toowoomba in Queensland and TS Kybra in Esperence WA.
In 2008 TS Toowoomba was awarded the prize for the most proficient Cadet Unit in Australia. This year they were listed as the best unit in their Flotilla and were shortlisted to win the proficiency award once again.
Although they missed out on winning this award, after being pipped to the post by TS Anzac from Rockingham, WA winning the award for 2009. They put up a great effort and deserve our congratulations. The following is an article supplied by TS Toowoomba which describes the events of their Annual Inspection. A total of 61 Cadets took part in the events described below;
On Wednesday 7th October 2009 TS Toowoomba celebrated her 4th Birthday and this was remembered with the cutting of our birthday cake.
On Sunday 11th October 2009 the Ships Company of TS Toowoomba prepared for their National Assessment by ANC, CAPT Eliot Fisher ANC. As the rain came down all morning we continued to prepare for an outdoor parade and sailing activity at our local dam.
Soon after lunch the sun appeared with the dark clouds hanging around in the distance. The cadets assembled for final preparations and awaited the arrival of the inspection team.
The Ships Company made an impressive display to the Inspection team, local politicians, the Mayor of Toowoomba, Regional council and local Defence personnel, families and friends.
A dozen cadets where also presented with their Bronze and Silver duke of Edinburgh award and 6 cadets obtained their marine radio licences from the Australian Maritime college – University of Tasmania.
The cadets of TS Toowoomba enjoy the challenges offered and are encouraged to enhance their skills.
After an afternoon tea, three defence coasters ferried the Cadets to Cressbrook dam some 45 minutes from Toowoomba to show the inspection team our boatshed and water skills prior to their departure. What a great day.
Our Thanks to SBLT Penny Gardiner, ANC from TS Toowoomba for providing this story and photo‘s for inclusion in our newsletter.
