11 Jun 2010: Uncle Nigel, You have been an inspiration to me for my entire life. I feel so blessed to have had such an extraordinary man as my godfather. Over the years given me so much support, guidance, joy and most of all, love. I will always cherish the times we spent together and I know you will always be with me. I hope that I can continue to make you proud. My daughter was born on your birthday, so we will always think of you as we celebrate. Aunty Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephie my heart is breaking for your loss. God must have needed your husband and dad for much bigger things. I know he will be with you always. I love you all and am praying that your grief will fade but the joyous memories will never diminish.

11 Jun 2010: Uncle Nigel, I knew you first and foremost as a beloved adopted "uncle", my father's best friend, and a officer he held in such high esteem. You were an inspiration to him, and to us. Your dry sense of humour always brought a smile to our faces, and I will always be proud I knew you. You made such an incredible impact, the qualities admire d in you will live on in the hearts of many, leaving the world a better place. My heart goes out to Aunty Vickie, Tim, Ben and Steph. To soon to lose a wonderful father and husband. My thoughts are with you, and know that you are never alone through all this, as all those who love you are here should you ever need a shoulder or a listening ear. Sail free Uncle Nigel, and may you be blessed with fair winds and following seas.

11 Jun 2010: My family's deepest condolences on the loss of your Husband, Father, Son and Brother. The Navy has lost one of its best and brightest stars, his spirit and legacy will live on in all those he touched and, by all those who will benefit of the touch he has left. His star will continue to light the way and remind us of all that is go od and possible in the world. As my Captain on Anzac throughout 2001, the respect he showed to each and every member of the ship's company was reflected in the respect he received. We would have followed him to the ends of the Earth and back again. Every task, regardless how menial, was conducted with the knowledge that the skipper would be proud. Under the guidance of then Captain Coates, you wanted to serve, both him and the Navy, with Honour, Honesty, Courage, Integrity and Loyalty just as he did. Under the guidance of Rear Admiral Coates, you saw all that was possible and had his support every step of the way. Fair winds and following seas, Sir.
Rear Admiral Peter Jones
11 Jun 2010: Nigel was a truly outstanding naval officer who had wonderful talents and great humanity. He made an immense contribution to the Royal Australian Navy. My sincere best wishes to Vicki and the family as they come to terms with Nigel's passing.
Les Dwyer
11 Jun 2010: One of the finest men I have ever met, Nigel will be sorely missed by all. He was a member of the Naval Association of Australia and supported our activities. He lent a honed and wisened ear to queries and questions regarding current operations and was always there to help and provide advice and assistance when needed. I offer my own and Lynda's sincere condolences to Vickie, Tim Ben and Stephanie and pass on the sincere condolences of the entire membership of the Naval Association of Australia. They have no grave but the cruel sea, No flowers lay at their head, A rusting hulk is their tombstone, Afast on the ocean bed. We Will Remember Nigel Coates. 'Lest We Forget'.

11 Jun 2010: I worked for RADM Coates when he was DGNPT. He was a lovely gentle man who took an active interest in the people who worked for him. I don't think I have ever worked for someone who I respect more than him. His guidance and humour will be missed by all. Rest in Peace Sir.
LEUT Simone Hoogland
11 Jun 2010: To the Coates family. I did not know Sir well and I have only one memory of him, but he performed a great act of kindness on my behalf that has stuck with me and shown me an example of the kind of Officer I would like to be. While posted as a MWV Navigating Officer, he was onboard my ship as Fleet Commander. At this time I had had planned leave to see my partner before he departed for the NAG cancelled. While onboard he learnt of this situation, and responded by lending my ship his Flag Lieutenant so I could go home, because he told me he thought it important to remember that Officer's were people too and that by caring for the people, you helped the Officer's perform. This event remains one of the most significant in my short career, and I was very saddened to hear of his untimely passing. My thoughts are with you at this darkest of times.
LS Heidi Cullis

10 Jun 2010: Fair winds and following seas; Ripples shimmer in sunsets golden; Cast your eyes to the heavens; Arise the first star of the night; A light shines bright when darkness contrasts; Earth in blue and blue of sky; When silenced falls after the bell; Soft sounds of waves upon the shore; When called to sail the seas of heaven; No longer bound to earthly soil; Abide in rest, no more to toil; The Captains table welcomes thee; Fair winds and following seas.
Dimity Knight
10 Jun 2010: I am shocked and saddened to hear of Nigel's passing. He was a lovely man and a good friend to me and my family. Much love and condolences to Vickie and the children. My prayers are with you.
LCDR Brett Westcott, ARDENT FOUR
10 Jun 2010: Sir, It was truly an honour to have served as one of your Commanding Officers. Your leadership was inspirational yet personal. Australia and the RAN have prematurely lost a fine officer, gentleman and seaman. I am comforted in the knowledge that you leave behind generations of sailors and officers who have been touched by your leadership. My sincere condolences your wife and family.
Mike Foster
10 Jun 2010: Nigel was a remarkable man. His inspiration will continue for many decades. As Midshipmen in Jarvis Division many of us tried his patience endlessly. We were always met with remarkable composure, dignity and maturity.
Drew Knight
10 Jun 2010: Very sad to hear of Nigel's passing. Was nice to have known him briefly in Newport in 2001. Thinking of Vickie and the family.
Julie Hewitt
10 Jun 2010: Nige, I knew what you were like outside of work, but I never fully understood what your job involved or how good you were at it. It was not until your funeral that I understood a little bit more, what a professional you were and what high regard your fellow naval personnel held you in. You were a lovely man and I am glad that I got to know you. You will be sorely missed at family functions and discussions. We will be here for Vick and the family, but we will never fill the void they now have in there lives. I hope you have gone on to a better place, with no pain or misery and I hope we will meet up again one day. Love you heaps and will miss you more.
LCDR Jason Middleton
10 Jun 2010: RADM Coates was also a champion of the Navy cause at ADFA, eager to come to the defense of us Midshipmen. As someone who initially taught me to sail yachts, rating each others' fish burleying off JB, and the inspiration to start a yacht savings account, he remained an inspiration both in and outside the RAN.
LCDR Grant White
10 Jun 2010: I only met RADM Coates a few times. Once in 1996 and then a few times as FC as he travelled about the fleet. I remember each occasion. An exceptional leader and Officer, dedicated, compassionate and thoughtful; he will be missed. My thoughts are with the family. He has passed too early. Fair winds and following seas Sir.
Chris and Sue Gibbs
10 Jun 2010: The premature passing of RADM Coates is a loss to the Navy and the future of Australia. Like Sir David Martin - RADM Coates was destined for higher office. I was fortunate enough to meet Nigel back in the late 1980's at CDSC and during LSSIT on HMAS Brisbane post DDG Mod. In later years my wife (Sue) worked with him while he was at HQJOC. We were both saddened to hear of the passing of this true gentleman. We wish to pass on our sympathy to his family.
R.F. Ingham, LEUT SDSU S RAN (Retd),Committee Member, The Nelson Society of Australia (Inc)

RADM Coates will long be remembered as a major supporter of the VADM Viscount Lord Nelson Perpetual Sword of Excellence for Leadership an annual award inaugurated by our society to commemorate the Bi-centenary of Trafalgar, 2005 and presented annually since 2006. A genuine Australian gentleman. Our sincerest sympathies to his wife Vickie, and children Tim, Ben & Stephanie.
WO Dave Devlin
10 Jun 2010: I was deeply saddened and shed a tear when I heard the news of his passing. I first met RADM Coates when he was XO of HMAS Darwin in 1992. We have on occasions crossed paths since, and on each occasion we would reminisce of those days. He was an exceptional leader who knew not just how to get the best out of people, but how to get people to want to do their best, and that is what made him so unique as a leader and manager. To his family my thoughts and prayers go out to you, his memory will live on within the Navy family for all time. Rest in Peace.
Kelvin Harris
10 Jun 2010: The passing Rear Admiral Coates who was such a great leader and someone who had the respect of all who served with him is an incredible loss to Australia. POCIS Michael Hayes
10 Jun 2010: A sad day for all who knew RADM Coates, I remember him sitting me down and talking about career progression when serving in HMAS Anzac in 2002. It was he who convinced me and then allowed me to fly from Christamas Island to HMAS Cerberus and conduct my alignment course and get promoted to LS. This I will never forget. Condolences to the entire Coates family.

10 Jun 2010: Sincere condolences, a true gentleman.
Ray Driffill
10 Jun 2010: My son had the privilege of being part of the ceremonial party to farewell RADM Coates. When my son was home on leave, I showed him a 1981 HMAS Perth Cruise Book where I served with RADM Coates when he was a SBLT. His nickname in the book is Admiral. I guess he achieved it. I lost my partner and wife of over 20 years last year and my condolences to RADM Coates family and I am sure you are all very proud of him as you should be.
Greg Glancy
10 Jun 2010: We do feel your loss as he rests in peace. Many years ago I was his training officer, I have always taken some pride in that.

10 Jun 2010: I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in that place, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in those walls for as long as that place remains. But I will admit, that the part of me that is staying, will very much miss the part of you that is going. RIP.
LTCOL(AAC) Danny O'Keefe

9 Jun 2010: I noticed Rear Admiral Nigel Coates's public appearances during the Fleet Entry into Sydney in 2009, and it made me proud to see this modern, youthful-looking man in charge on the Australian fleet operations. This was obviously a man of precocious abilities, and one great human warmth by every account. I never knew him or had any connection, but it came as a shock when, visiting a naval friend at HMAS Cerberus, I learned of his untimely passing this week. Sincere condolences to the family.
Naomi Ager, RAN Rtd

9 Jun 2010: I served with Nigel in MHQ in the 90's and had the pleasure of half an hour chatting with him in the Canberra Qantas Club last year. The comparison with Sir David Martin is most appropriate. Both of them extraordinary officers who could make your day with a smile. The country has lost a most gifted man. My sincerest condolences to the Coates family, who have lost the most of all.
CMDR Lisa Batchler

LEUT Court Kruger, Currently Serving Operationally in East Timor.
9 Jun 2010: I only had the pleasure of meeting RADM Coates once in 2008. During the 2008 Force Concentration Period he briefly embarked in HMAS Sirius where I was working as a junior Officer of the Watch. Before he departed he made a point of approaching me and complimenting me on my skills as an Officer of the Watch. It was one of the proudest moments in my career. My heart felt condolences and thoughts are with you as you try to come to terms with your loss.

9 Jun 2010: I had the honour to work for this wonderful and inspiring man whilst posted to ADFA, and as is the way on the Navy, caught up with each other many times in various places since. I have fond memories of his Yacht breaking its mooring at Bateman's Bay, after repairing it for him, I recal his story of fighting with a local Octopus to reclaim his mooring block. Not only was Nigel the ultimate professional, he was a damm good bloke! A great loss to not only his beloved family, but the RAN and all who have had the pleasure of knowing or serving with him. One of the best, We'll miss you mate!
LCDR Paul Hosie, RANR
9 Jun 2010: Served with you on FFG02 - HMAS Canberra 1997-1998. During my 26 years service in both lower deck and wardroom, you were one of very few that I observed to receive the respect and admiration of all in your command. I attribute this to your outstanding personal values of fairness, integrity, humility and good humour. There is little doubt that your influence upon all those you came into contact with will be treasured and fondly remembered. As this tribute list attests. RIP
Paul Bartlett
9 Jun 2010: Vickie, I think VADM Crane put it well when he said Nigel was universal liked and respected. He was a great boss to me, especially on ANZAC. My heart felt condolences to you and the children, we will miss a great leader and mentor, but your loss cannot be compared. I hope the warmth of feeling from the Navy goes some way to ameliorate your grief.
David Freeman, WGCDR RAAF ret'd

9 Jun 2010: Dear Mrs Vickie Coates and family, It with great sadness that I have just heard of the passing of your husband and father, Nigel. I was fortunate to work alongside Nigel at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995 as I was posted in mid year as his replacement. He was a thoroughly professional officer who was well respected by his superiors, peers and most importantly his subordinates. I enjoyed his company and friendship in the limited time that we worked together. I wish you and your family all the best for the future. Warmest regards, Michael Weibler
Leut Steve Delo MBE
9 Jun 2010: To a compassionate leader who made a great impression on me when I first arrived as a Pommie only a few years ago. Keen to see the standard berating of Junior Officers a thing of the past and see people in their true light based on merit and professionalism. A good man who will be sadly missed.
Eric and Lynda Burton
9 Jun 2010: We have such fond memories of you in Newport RI when your car was lent to us - first time I had met you. I think Nigel was a bit dissapointed that I was not a keen sailor like he was. Vicki we send you and the children our love and give thanks to God for Nigel's life

9 Jun 2010: Condolences to Mrs Coates and family in these difficult moments. I first met RADM Coates many years ago, in his role as XO HMAS Darwin, and on many occasions since. Much has already been said about RADM Coates, sentiments to which I can only echo. The legacy of his professionalism and outstanding leadership will stay in the hearts and minds of all who met him. May his memory live long and strong. An honour, Sir.

9 Jun 2010: I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Rear Admiral Nigel Coates on many occasions during my career as a photographer. His lasting image was captured by myself during a filming day on Sydney harbour. A memory that will remind me of a great man. Rear Admiral Coates was always approachable, and willing to talk, and listen to all ranks about the thoughts and views of the Royal Australian Navy. He was passionate about his work, and always displayed an upbeat view regardless of the topics discussed. Rear Admiral Coates was a man to look up to as an Officer of the Royal Australian Navy, and also a great leader who has helped shape the Royal Australian Navy into what we see today. A truly inspirational man, Rear Admiral Coates will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathies are extended to his family during this sad time. Fair winds Sir.
David Speight
9 Jun 2010: It is with great sadness that today, we attend the ceremony in Sydney, to honour the life of one of Australia's greatest people. A Senior Naval Officer and a friend. I first met Nigel when he was a Cadet Midshipman at Creswell in the mid 70s and I was a long haired kid living just outside the base, attending Nowra High School. In later years, when Nigel was a Commander at ADFA in the early 1990s and I was a newly commissioned Officer (ex CPO), the two of us were among a bunch of others undergoing the Australian Yachting Federation TL4 Yacht Master training course. Navy required this qualification for its Skippers in the Sail Training Yachts such as Lady Penrhyn, Alexander etc. At that time Nigel was already an accomplished Yachtsman, and even owned his own yacht. As a Seaman Officer, he was also BWC qualified. Nigel could have claimed exemption (RPL) for the classroom navigation and theory components of the course, however chose to 'stay the course', stick with the team and in doing so, Nigel provided valuable assistance to some of us less experienced folk, especially me. He and I sat talking on many occasions, especially during the many practical training weekends away in Sydney and in Jervis Bay where we even camped onboard the yachts in sweaty, humid and salty conditions. We stayed in touch from time to time over the years and it was clear to me when I first came to know Nigel, that he was going places in his career. He was a true gentleman, a great leader and probably the most personable and respected Senior Naval Officer I know. It is such a shame that his life has been cut short and my heart is with the Coates family now. A tragic loss, with greatest respect to the family and Admiral Nigel Coates. Farewell Sir. Thank you for being a part of my life.
CAPT Brenton Smyth
9 Jun 2010: I trust that the knowledge of RADM Coates' positive impact on the Navy and its people provides strength to the Coates family during this difficult period. Sir, your legacy will endure. Fair winds.
ABCIS James Grant
9 Jun 2010: To the family of RADM Coates, Sorry to hear for your loss of such a great man. I had to pleasure of meeting RADM Coates on several occasions. He was a great influence on myself and my peers around me and he will be sadly missed.

9 Jun 2010: I'm so sorry for your loss, and may I pass on my condolences to the family of RADM Nigel Coates on the passing of a brilliant and thoughtful military and Naval mind so soon in his life, I myself have lost several friends to cancer and I was struck every time by the dignity shown by them. God bless and far winds and following seas to you Admiral.
WOCSM Perry White
8 Jun 2010: Mrs Coates and Family, It is with indescribable sadness that I learned of the passing of Nigel. Like so many within The Navy Family both past and present, I too consider myself so fortunate to have had the privilege of working for and alongside him. Nigel's support, guidance and professionalism inspired all with whom he served. In my eyes he shall always be the ultimate Officer and Gentleman.
CMDR Paul Moggach, Commanding Officer 817 Squadron
8 Jun 2010: On behalf of the Officers and Sailors of 817 SQN, please accept our deepest condolences at the sudden passing of RADM Coates. Throughout a military career, we may meet many fine tacticians, quite a few natural leaders and the odd true gentlemen, but only rarely will we meet an individual who possesses all three traits, RADM Coates was one of those rare individuals and we are much poorer for his passing. Yet our loss as a Navy is nothing compared with the loss of a father, brother or husband. Our thoughts and prayers are therefore with RADM Coates' family. Vale Sir. You will be sadly missed, yet memory of your achievements will continue to inspire and guide.

8 Jun 2010: It was with great sadness that I heard of Nigel's passing. Nigel was known as an inspiration to his crew and a true officer and gentleman. Thankyou Nigel, for inspiring those around you to always strive for the best. 8 Jun 2010: Admiral Lord Nelson once said "Recollect that you must be a seaman to be an officer and also that you cannot be a good officer without being a gentleman". Those fine words fittingly describe Rear Admiral Coates. Rest in peace kind Sir.
Captain Russ Schedlich, RANR
8 Jun 2010: It was with great sadness that I learned of the recent passing of Nigel. I was privileged to serve with him in a number of capacities in the late 1990s when I was working at Maritime Headquarters. Nigel was a quiet achiever and I have watched his progression to a senior leadership role with great delight. It is such a tragedy that someone who still had so much to give to the Navy and the nation is taken so soon. The sadness that I and the Navy feel is nought compared to that which his family are now bearing, and I send my heartfelt condolences in this time of great sadness. May you obtain strength from Nigel's legacy.
Paddy Hodgman
8 Jun 2010: Nigel, you were by any standards one of the really good officers who made the Navy better through your service. That's something that will endure and live on, and we should all remember you with gratitude.

Rest in Peace Sir.

8 Jun 2010: Mrs Coates and family, It has been a privilege and an honor to have worked with sir and yourself whilst RADM Coates was the fleet commander and to be amongst those requested to attend his funeral. Unfortunately due to my move to London I am unable to attend but my thoughts are with yourself and your family during this time. RADM Coates will be missed by many not simple because he was an officer or a gentlemen he will be missed because he touched so many lives in positive ways including mine and he has given his time to all no matter there rank or position. My deep felt condolences.
Greg Buckenara
8 Jun 2010: My Sincere and Heartfelt condolences to the Family and Friends of Rear Admiral Coates, crossed the Bar too soon. Fair Winds and Smooth Seas Sir.

An extremely capable, wonderful, and graceful man; who was admired by so many people. He will be greatly missed, particularly by you his loving family, and his many friends. You will be in our and so many others prayers, at this difficult time as you grieve his loss. 8 Jun 2010: My sincere condolences to the Coates family on their loss of RADM Coates. As one who was fortunate enough to know and serve with the young dedicated Naval gentleman as our paths crossed both on land and sea, I will always hold in high regard the grace and professionalism that he conveyed to all. Smooth seas Sir.

8 Jun 2010: Sir, I will be forever grateful to you for the kindness you showed our family. You were an inspiration, and taken way too soon. My deepest sympathy to Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie.

8 Jun 2010: A credit to the Navy, admired by all those who knew him and respected by all who served with him. Will be sadly missed.
David and Debbie De Souza
8 Jun 2010: There is an obvious thread in the many tributes expressed about Nigel. He had that sometime elusive quality that most aspiring leaders seek; it was his ability to gain the respect and loyalty of those whose safety and well-being he felt responsible for. Without a doubt, Nigel, through his own personal conduct and example, was able to sustain this quality throughout his life, both at home and at work. His untimely passing is a sad loss not only for his family but for the Navy family as well, all of whom he loved and cared for very much. May God bless you, Captain, and pilot you safely into His harbour. And from now on do keep an eye out for us boat-drivers! Our deepest sympathies go to Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie.
Kim Wettern, Chief of Protocol to the U.S. Ambassador to Australia, Canberra, Australia
8 Jun 2010: Dear Family and Friends of RADM Coates, AM RAN, It is with a saddened heart that I write to pass on my condolences for the sudden passing of RADM Nigel Coates. It was with great privilege and strength that RADM Coates supported me throughout my junior years as a Naval Officer. His strength, sense of purpose and generous enthusiasm was always a source of inspiration. Following on from my uniformed time in the Navy, I was fortunate to meet again with RADM Coates, whilst I was involved with the Australian High Commission in London and more recently now with my time at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra. His departure will certainly ring through to the core of the Australian and International Naval communities. I hope the love and support of friends and family will bring you comfort through this difficult time.
Tom Strasser
8 Jun 2010: As an ex member of the RAN , my condolences to the family. He was taken much too soon.
Chris Perrin, CEO RSL NSW
8 Jun 2010: Nigel was one of life's true gentlemen, and a great bloke. I know that all in the RSL wish his family our deepest sympathy and condolences in this very sad time. Nigel was generous with his time and his patience to all that he touched, he shall be rewarded. Lest we Forget.
LCDR Peter Ellis
8 Jun 2010: Nigel was a classmate at the RAN College at Jervis Bay, in 1977-78. It was always evident to those of us there at the time that he was destined for great things. He fulfilled our hopes but, more truly, he was fulfilling his potential. However, his fullest potential will not be known. Chaplain Alan Asplin, RANR published a "Daily Devotionals for Naval Personnel" several years ago. On 2 June, the Thought for the Day was a quote from Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, "This I like; active service or none." This seemed a fitting epitaph for Nigel Coates on the day he died.
CMDR Justin Jones
8 Jun 2010: RADM Nigel Coates was one of those exemplary officers who inspired young Midshipmen, as I was when I first met him serving in Brisbane. Our paths crossed here and there over the next 20 years until recently, when he was my boss in FHQ and then during my time in command. My initial impressions have never changed. He was softly spoken, a true gentleman and had absolute convictions on the value of Navy's people. While we have indeed lost a great naval officer and shipmate, the Coate's family has lost a husband, father, brother and son; who is irreplaceable. I hope that these messages and the celebration of his life and achievements go some way to dampening the pain. Farewell Admiral. Fair winds and following seas.
CPO Jock Campbell
8 Jun 2010: Sad tidings. My condolences to you and your family. Be assured that your husband left all who served with him better people for the experience.
Steven Paterson
8 Jun 2010: Much condolence for this sad time. I worked for 'Coatsy' on the Anzac on the 01 Gulf deployment. Whilst working downstairs in the engine-room maintaining the PDE's, in the fumes and diesel fuel I kept my end up because I knew he was upstairs keeping his end up. He took the time to recognise my efforts (and the efforts of many others), for which i was very grateful. He made sure we were safe and importantly 'got the job done'. Ooooorooo Skipper.
Derek Brewer
8 Jun 2010: RADM Coates served as Executive Officer in HMAS Darwin during 1991/1992 (DAMASK V) where I was a member of the Ship's company. He will always be remembered by me as someone that the Ship's company could look to for support whether it be service or personal related. I wish his family my condolences during this time of hurt. He will be sadly missed within the Naval community.
ANZAC CST, HMAS Watson
8 Jun 2010: Rear Admiral Coates was, to us, a great leader and a genuinely wonderful person, who touched all of us that have served with him. Pipe the side RADM Coates departing.

8 Jun 2010: Nigel created some of the strongest impressions on me of what a great leader should be. He obviously had the same effect on others he met. He was caring and gentle yet firm. He had a true passion for the Navy and sailing which is where I met him. A great bloke. My condolences to the entire Coates family.

8 Jun 2010: He excelled in all he did and his loss is a great tragedy. R.I.P.

8 Jun 2010: Goodbye mate, you will be missed. My heartfelt sympathies to family and friends, stay solid.
Marguerite Wakfer, Victoria
8 Jun 2010: A stellar career for a dedicated Navy Man. RADM Coates was my son's Captain on HMAS Anzac during its deployment in the Persian Gulf. I know from my son's conversations that Cptn Coates was deeply admired and a very fine leader. My son also commented that when he met RADM Coates after this time that RADM Coates always took the time to address him by name and catch up. Undoubtedly RADM Coates contributed by word, deed and example to the positive development of many service careers. My sincere condolences to his family.
Major General Liz Cosson
8 Jun 2010: I offer my sincere condolences to Nigel's family, colleagues and friends at this sad time. A fine officer, gentleman and leader, Nigel will be sadly missed by all who knew and served with him. Draw comfort from the memories and that you are in our prayers and our thoughts.
Dave J Mannah
8 Jun 2010: During RADM Nigel Coates posting at HMAS Kuttabul as Fleet Commander i performed my duties as a Security Officer at Kuttabul Gangway and no matter how many times Nigel would be driven in or out of these gates he would be so humble to give us a wave on the way through, where many of lower rank would not acknowledge, as we are just 'security guards'. My personal memory of this wonderful man is just before Christmas '09 while on the night shift at around 0100hrs dressed in casual clothes, Nigel came up from the Wardroom were he was staying for a night or two and handed me a half a box of Ferrero Rocher Chocolate and said, 'you guys will have to help me finish these, so enjoy' after reading this mans' lifes' work how could i possibly help him with anything, i thanked him as he returned to the Wardroom and thought of the countless Officers who used to complain about the steep hill from Wardroom to Kuttabul Gangway, yet for this experience we were not Rear Admiral and Security Guard, he showed me simple human thoughtfulness and respect. Oh what a great loss this man is to you, his family. Rest assured 'with the wind at his back, he will sail in ever so calm waters to heaven' I salute you, RADM Nigel Coates.
Brian Tingey
8 Jun 2010: A true gentleman. Very sorry to see his passing. My heart goes out to Nigel's family losing a dad and husband at such an early age.
Melissa and Peter Lipsett
7 Jun 2010: Dear Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie, Peter and I were so shocked to hear of Nigel's tragic illness and death late last week and we just want to say how very, very sorry we are. We can only imagine your very deep pain and distress at this time and would just want you to know how very much you are in our thoughts and prayers. How sorry we are that our paths have not crossed more in the last few years. We remember you and Nigel with great fondness however. I know that Ben, Sam and Stephanie must be about the same age as our own children and our hearts and prayers go out to them as they seek to deal with this terrible loss of their dad. We particularly pray that our heavenly father will surround you with his love and peace at this time, and that you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Nigel is held safe with him. May God fill you with great hope as you trust in him. With much love and blessings.
Rosemary Aldred
7 Jun 2010: Selfishly many tears for our loss,a great friend, god father, & "uncle". Words cannot express how we are feeling, the loss we feel for your beautiful bride & incredible kids. You will always be remembered, honoured, treasured by all you touched & all who knew you. 'Til we meet again... smooth sailing 'bug'.
Tony Aldred
7 Jun 2010: Nigel - you were a loyal classmate, caring mentor, gifted leader and the quintessential good bloke. You were in my wedding party - you drove the car that brought my wife to me almost 30 years ago, a task you took so seriously that you drove as if your very life depended on it. Regardless of age or rank you have always embodied what it is to be an Admiral, from Arabic "El Amir al", which means "esteemed leader of the sea", but in so doing you have never changed from the decent young man I first met over 33 years ago. I will miss you my friend - you truly were one in a million. Rosemary and my family will be here for Vickie, Tim, Ben and Steph as you rest in peace.
Michael Hein (RANSA member)
7 Jun 2010: I remember meeting RADM Coates at a RANSA function night. I cannot remember the exact function. He left an impression with me that he was a rare type of man who could speak to you or anyone else in a manner that would bring the best out of you especially if you were serving under him. Life has lost a rare character too early. Keep him secure in your hearts & memories. My deepest condolences.
Stephen Snell
7 Jun 2010: Served with RADM Coates on HMAS Brisbane in 1988. Sad loss to the RAN. My condolences to his family. RIP
CPO Don Waples
7 Jun 2010: Vickie, family and extended family, Condolences to you all for the loss of a loved and close friend, and Navy icon. He will be missed by us all. Vickie, we met in 1985 and you went out and supported me in my time of need - I have never looked back from that day, and I thank you. My deepest and personal sympathy to you and your loved ones in your time of grief.

7 Jun 2010: How sad to lose someone so young, so vital and so influential. My sincere condolences to the Coates family and to the Navy family at large. May he rest in peace.
ATTACK ONE - Armidale Class Patrol Boat crew
7 Jun 2010: The passing of RADM Coates came as a shock to ATTACK ONE while patrolling off Christmas Island in support of OP RESOLUTE. Many of the Officers and Crew knew of RADM Coates as a professional, focused, and hard working senior officer dedicated toward improving the RAN and enhancing the ideals under which we serve. A huge loss for the RAN community, and an enormous loss for the Coates family. Sir, you will be sadly missed. "Never Waver" (CO, ATTACK ONE - LCDR Michael Letts, RAN).
Sally Shields (nee Osbourne) and Family
7 Jun 2010: I cannot say that I really know Nigel Coates very well, but he has been my brothers best friend for 35 years. During my brothers early days in the Navy we visited HMAS Creswell often and Nigel was always kind, thoughtful and charming to me as a young school girl. My enduring memory of him was the recent visit to Sydney of the fleet when on being interviewed on the evening news he was asked what the sailors would be doing to occupy themselves over the weekend. With a decided twinkle in his eye he commented to the reporter that "I'm sure that they will all be going to church - don't you?" My husband Earle and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Vicki and the family.
Fr Stuart Hall (SCHA)
7 Jun 2010: While many words will be spoken to describe the character of RADM Nigel Coates, these words will never fully capture the essence of the man - who quietly displayed the professional values of the Navy in both his professional and family life. Vicki, Tim, Ben and Stephanie be assured of the prayers from the Catholic Defence Members. Nigel Rest in Peace.
Tony Paterson
7 Jun 2010: To the entire Coates family, my deepest condolences. Whilst the Navy, the ADF and Australia have lost a great man, you have lost far more, a son, a brother, a husband and a father. The calibre of the man is represented by the diversity of those who have expressed their deep sorrow at Nigel's untimely death. He was, and will always be, the epitome of the term 'an officer and a gentleman'. Nigel, Rest In Peace.
Rod (Rocket) & Noela Reeves
7 Jun 2010: Vickie, We both were shocked at Nigel passing and we wish you and your children our very best. Keep strong.

7 Jun 2010: Nigel was one of life's true gentlemen - he always took the time to say hello and to have a genuine conversation irrespective of occasion. He was the definitive good bloke - widely liked and respected by all. A great naval officer and a good man who will be sorely missed. Fair winds.
The Hon. Bob Baldwin MP, Shadow Minister for Defence Science & Personnel Assisting Shadow Minister for Defence
7 Jun 2010: I had the honour and opportunity to meet RADM Nigel Coates on many occasions, what I found most evident wast that Nigel was a man who clearly stood out among his peers. His leadership qualities were only surpassed by his passion and compassion for the people he led. Nigel's strong contribution to the development of the Australian Defence Force will never be forgotten. To his wife, Vicki, children, Tim, Ben & Stephanie, to his Naval family, his friends, my sincere condolences.
LCDR David Baker
7 Jun 2010: Having served with RADM Coates on two occasions, first when he was a young LEUT in HMAS Adelaide and then again when he was Chief of Staff at HQJOC, it is with a great personal sense of loss that I pass on my heart felt condolences. A great leader, gone to early.
Tony Raeside
7 Jun 2010: I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Rear Admiral Coates. My condolences and thoughts are with the Coates family at this very difficult time. I was privileged to serve with Nigel in HMAS Adelaide in the late 1980s, and his professionalism, can-do attitude and inclusive nature have left an enduring impact on me and many across the ADF. He will be greatly missed.

7 Jun 2010: Nigel was a bloke who inspired and shaped me when he was XO of Darwin and I was a young kellick. I've always admired his calmness and professionalism. Rest in Peace.

7 Jun 2010: Vickie, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Nigel's passing. I recall when you and I were at HMAS Watson and Nigel was on the Seaman Warfare Officers Course (SWOC). You made a great couple and I trust you and the children have many happy memories, and that you are surrounded by the love, support and prayers of family and all who had the pleasure to have crossed paths with Nigel.

7 Jun 2010: We have lost another valuable and wonderful person within our community I have known RADM Coates for many years. He was my CO on HMAS Canberra and I his Signals Yeoman. I have followed his career with admiration and was extremely pleased when he became the Fleet Commander. My family's thoughts and prayers go to you all at this sad and regrettable time. May he now rest in peace.

Nick and Mel Sandeman
7 Jun 2010: Dear Vickie and family, our deepest condolences and thoughts are with you all at this time. Nigel's passing is a tragic loss to all and the Navy has lost one its very finest officers. Even from the early days at the College Nigel had 'watch this man and follow in his wake' written all over him for he was indeed a true leader and gentleman. Nigel's calm and considered manner (whatever the chaos around him) and his genuine concern for his fellow shipmates are just a couple of the many hallmarks of this truly memorable man with whom I had the wonderful privilege of serving and calling a mate. Rest in peace my friend.
Brian Maher
7 Jun 2010: We are all deeply saddened by the news of Nigel Coates' passing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please pass on my sincere condolences to his family.

7 Jun 2010: Nigel certainly contributed to RANSA in many ways, and I have very fond memories of discussions with Vickie and he about his yacht, Talisman, and their plans for the future. I will remember him as the engaging, intelligent and inspiring gentleman that he was. My condolences to the Coates family, his friends and peers for this tragic loss.
Annie Casey
7 Jun 2010: Nigel Coates will be sadly missed by every person who came into contact with him. It was a pleasure to work for him as his Public Affairs Officer when he was DGNPT. I noted and watched with interest the direction he gave to many things and to many people and to see those initiatives come to fruition. His "people" skills were superb - a rare gift . He was an enlightened manager and an inspirational leader - respected and admired by all. My sincere condolences to his family and friends from my family. An outstanding individual with exceptional qualities and heart.

7 Jun 2010: Deepest condolences and sympathies to the Coates family. Nigel contributed to many peoples lives in such a positive and inspiring way. He will be remembered as the consummate officer and gentleman, mentor and yachtsman. Nigel served on the board of RANSA. His family, shipmates, crewmates and our Navy have suffered a great loss.
CMDR Guy Blackburn, Commanding Officer HMAS Stuart
7 Jun 2010: To Vickie and family. On behalf of the HMAS Stuart family, both current and ex-serving, our deepest sympathies and condolences to you on the all too early departure of your husband, father, brother and friend. Rear Admiral Coates was, to us, a great leader, naval officer and a genuinely wonderful person. He touched all who served with him through his compassion, humanity and sincerity. It is through these memories that he will be fondly remembered by us. He embodied everything one could aspire to be and motivated many of us to be better people. Outwardly Rear Admiral Coates personified Kipling's If. His effortless ability to "Walk with kings but never lose the common touch" coupled with his enthusiasm and love of life positively affected us all. As one of our sailors said on hearing of his passing, He was a good bloke, it is sad that he is gone. We cannot begin to understand your loss but please know that you are in our thoughts at this difficult time and into the future. We wish you peace in time knowing that he meant a lot to us as well. We wish him fair winds and following seas. Home is the sailor, home from the sea. We trust that he is resting peacefully.

7 Jun 2010: Our deepest condolence and prayers of strength for Vickie and the family. Nigel meant so much to many people as a friend, a mentor and a leader. His legacy will live on in those whom had the privilege to serve with, and under, him. He will not be forgotten, and my memories of him will be cherished forever. His spirit continues in us all.
LCDR Beau Moylan
7 Jun 2010: I am so sorry to hear of your loss, my heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I have known RADM Coates for over 20 years. When we first met (HMAS Adelaide) he was my Divisional Officer (Lieutenant) and I was a young Leading Seaman; his professionalism and commitment was well known, but I remember him more for his natural ability to be a 'nice bloke' and always available for a chat. My admiration for him was so strong that during my interview for Commissioning, I was asked to identify a person that I admire: That person was RADM Coates. I can still hear his words of encouragement.
CPOET Robin N. McMillan
7 Jun 2010: To all of our extended family's affected by this tragic loss my wife, children and I extend our deepest condolences. Nigel and I shared the same "master" for nearly 22 years yet we never served together, but that was out of our control. What was in my control was external to our shared carers in the Navy where in life I regret tha t I didn't make a greater effort to spend time with this inspirational man and get to know him beyond the uniform. Why is it that as the world gets smaller, families seem to move further apart? We have prematurely lost a fine member of two families, ours and the Navy's. So long cousin, may the winds be fair and the seas calm. Yours Aye.
ABWTR K. Spencer
7 Jun 2010: The Epitome of the Naval Officer. A Great Man who will be Greatly missed by the RAN. My sincere condolences to his family.

7 Jun 2010: We met RADM Nigel Coates and his wife last June, at our sons passing out parade at HMAS Creswell. We were very taken with his friendly down to earth nature, and concern for navy families. We send our sincere sympathy to his wife and family at this time of tragic loss. It is a very sad day, when good people are taken so early in life.
CMDR John Hodges RAN (Rtd)
7 Jun 2010: A sad loss to the RAN. In the old adage he was a true Officer and a Gentleman.
Commodore Daryl W. Bates AM RAN
7 Jun 2010: Dear Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie, It was with enormous sadness that Merilyn and I learnt of Nigel's diagnosis in early January this year. It is a measure of the man that he took the time to telephone me personally to convey the news. His manner then was optimistic, yet realistic and he displayed great bravery. I met Nigel at the Naval College, so many years ago and have followed in his quite remarkable wake ever since. The Navy has five values; honour, honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty. These are the values that Nigel epitomised long before we decided to formally adopt them as our Navy values. In recent times we've designed ten signature behaviours: Respect the contribution of every individual. Promote the wellbeing and development of all Navy people. Communicate well and regularly. Challenge and innovate. Be cost conscious. Fix problems, take action. Drive decision making down. Strengthen relationships across and beyond Navy. Be the best I can. Make Navy proud, make Australia proud. As I reflect now on these signature behaviours I realise that they are Nigel. He was, is and always will be, in our minds, the embodiment of so much that we would wish to be. The most professional and respected Naval Officer I have ever had the fortune to meet. I, like us all, will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. Our very best wishes.
WO Gary Wight & CPO Barker
7 Jun 2010: A loved and universally respected gentleman who will be sorely missed. Michelle and I send our love and condolences to the Coates family. God Bless.

7 Jun 2010: The privelege of working for RADM Coates was the single greatest honour I have ever had. There was never a day went by that I wasn't reminded by him how important my work was to him. His charisma and openness made him the most amazing person to know and his presence alone was enough to motivate me to my best. My deepest sympathies to Mrs Coates and the Coates family, I will never forget the time I had with Sir, he was an inspiration.
ABWTR James Downey
7 Jun 2010: My deepest condolences to the Coates Family. I had the honour of working for the Admiral towards the end of his tenure as Fleet Commander. A true Flag Officer with magnetic charisma and presence, who always had time for his people, despite the vast workload and responsibility of his position. May he rest in peace.
Commander Craig J. Bates RANR
7 Jun 2010: Please convey my most sincere condolences to Vickie and her family. During my modest naval career, I was honoured to see Nigel join the RAN College, excel in his training and blossom into the most professional naval officer I have ever met. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him during his illustrious career.
Chris Morris
7 Jun 2010: A true gentleman, classmate and the epitomy of a Naval Officer. As his biography tells (and we all knew) always destined for higher things. Home is the sailor, home from the sea.

7 Jun 2010: My deepest sympathies go out to the Coates Family. I consider myself honoured, privileged and extremely lucky to have served under a great Man and great Officer such as Nigel Coates. Every interaction with Nigel was a positive experience, be it a pat on the back for a job well done or a dressing down. Nigel always had time for a hello and a chat and was only too willing to share his knowledge and offer advice to Officers and Sailors alike. Nigel was a positive influence and source of encouragement during my Naval Career and has been a strong influence on my recent consideration to return...Yes Sir, you were right, I should never have left the service. You will always be remembered as a great leader who inspired all who followed. A man gone before his time......Calm seas and fair winds, may you rest in peace.
Steve Gadzio
6 Jun 2010: It was an honour and privilege to have had the opportunity to serve with Nigel as his XO in Canberra. I will always remember Nigel for the uncomplicated way he got things done. He was an awesome ship driver and brilliant tactician, maintaining his composure in tense and demanding situations. He always took the time to have a chat to members of the Ship's Company, and build a rapport with his sailors and officers. I will miss his dry and appropriate sense of humour but above all, I will miss my friend. Nigel was "The Master and Commander". My deepest condolences go to Vickie and family. Rest in Peace.
WOMT Michael Mallet
6 Jun 2010: My thoughts and heart felt wishes go to the Coates family in this time of need. The Navy has lost a true warrior, a gentleman and a remarkable humanbeing. He will be greatly missed by those who served with him and for him, and for me, it has been an honour to serve with and for him. Yours Aye, Michael (Ash) Mallet SMT HMAS Newcastle.

6 Jun 2010: Dear Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie; you are in our thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. It was such an honour to serve on the personal staff, and he always made the Kelly family feel welcome when we met. I am a better person for knowing "the Boss" and his leadership style will be with me forever. Nigel may be gone, however, he will not be forgotten. Warmest sympathies.

6 Jun 2010: My sincere condolences. RADM Coates was our 'D' in HMAS Brisbane. His leadership and counsel in the art of Air Control will be cherished. A fine man gone too soon.

Our Navy Cadets have been privileged to meet RADM Nigel Coates on several occasions during his tenure as Fleet Commander. Memorable occasions for TS Sirius were during 2008 & 2009 when the RADM met with our Cadets and Staff at the Australian National Maritime Museum during ceremonial events, and again in June 2009 when he chatted with us at the NEOC Pass-Out at HMAS Creswell as we witnessed two of our former members graduate as MIDNs. RADM Coates made a huge impression on Cadets with his sense of humour, charm and friendly nature. He took time out from his busy duties to spend some time with Navy Cadets, and these young people were highly impressed and honoured by the attention he gave them. The RADM was clearly a man who cared about the youth of Australia, he loved the RAN and those who serve, and he will be sadly missed by so many people, not only in the Australian Defence community, but also by the many service members of other nations whose paths crossed with him. Rest in Peace, RADM Nigel Coates SM RAN, and peace also to your family and friends who have loved you.
Sarah Sciacca(ex-Army)
5 Jun 2010: To Vicki and family, my thoughts are with you at this time, having had the pleasure to work with RADM Coates in his time as CDF office I was saddened to hear of his passing. He was and will always be a great person to have worked with and known.
CAPT Martin Brooker
5 Jun 2010: To Vickie, Tom, Ben and Stephanie, Mac and Gwenda, Sandy and Hugh My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you in this deepest loss. The character of Nigel the man that we 15 year olds came to know in 1978 on day one in the Navy was exactly the same character that those of us who worked with him as Fleet Commander in 2009. He was a leader who was pragmatic, balanced, thoughtful, compassionate with a dry sense of humour who always gave you room to be you....a decent man in every way. May he rest in peace and may you be comforted by the legacy of everything he did for you. He will be remembered by us as a great leader who has gone too early.
Anne, Andrew, David and Mitchell Cox
5 Jun 2010: To my dearest Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. I have been reading through Nigel's achievements and realise how proud you must be of him. I'm so sorry he was taken from you so soon. My love and best wishes to you.
Grant, Kay, Michael, Daniel and Rebecca Ferguson
5 Jun 2010: Dearest Vickie, Tim, Ben and Stephanie, We are experiencing an empty silence, a deep sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why Nigel left this earth so soon, nor why he left before we were ready to say good-bye; but as time passes we begin to remember that although he's gone, he lived a remarkable life and he left us with memories too wonderful to forget. Our love to you all.
5 Jun 2010: To Vicki and family, on behalf of all our members please accept our most sincere condolences. Nigel's passing was a premature and tragic end to a brilliantly successful career and we will miss him greatly. We know he had more mountains to climb and we can only imagine the stress, courage and pain yo u have endured in the past 6 months. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult and sad time. Best Wishes.
ABSTD Kelleher
4 Jun 2010: I can only echo what others have all ready said above me. RADM Coates always took the time to say a quick G'day and to actually ask sincerely how you we're doing. My thought's are with the Coates family in this time of mourning. May he rest in peace.
LCDR Garry Callow, RANR
4 Jun 2010: I was saddened to hear of Nigels passing, I did a sailing course with him for 2 weeks in the early 90's. I quickly realised in the confines of our yacht that here was a man who was a leader with a touch of humility and humour who always got the best out of us by his attitude and example. I was not at all surprised to see him become a Rear Admiral and he was obviously a true family man too. You should be very proud of him indeed. With much respect and sympathy for your loss.
LCDR L Walker, RANR
4 Jun 2010: Mrs Coates & family. The first time I had the priviledge of meeting RADM Nigel Coates was during the renaming ceremony on board P & O's Pacific Dawn and as a naval reservist talking to the Fleet Commander it was a true honour. He was such a gracious and inspiring person and the epitomy of leadership. Sir, fair winds & following seas.
Commanding Officer, CMDR Heath Robertson, and the Crew of HMAS Parramatta
4 Jun 2010: To Vickie and your family. We are all deeply saddened to hear of your loss. May the peace which comes from memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

4 Jun 2010: Ma'am and Family, Please accept my deepest condolences from myself and family. I worked with RADM Coates on several occasions and I had the utmost respect for him. He was at my investiture in September last year and he met my wife who was deeply impressed by him. She also is very upset to hear of his recent passing. Words are never enough at a time like this and I just wanted you to know that you are in our prayers. With the deepest of respect and sympathy, Yours Aye.
CMDR Ken Walters and Family
4 Jun 2010: From when I met the Admiral in 1980, till we worked together last year, he was a great friend, yachtsman, leader and mentor who always had time for his people. As everyone has said, a sad, sad day for The Navy and the Coates Family. The thoughts of Maree, Melissa, David and I are with Vickie, Ben, Tim and Stephanie, his parents and extended family.
John Perryman

4 Jun 2010: Mrs Coates, my condolences go out to you and your family. I was lucky enough to serve under Admiral Coates on numerous occasions: ADFA, Anzac in 2001, and during his time as Fleet Commander. He was a truly inspirational Officer and leader, the type of man that people just wanted to be around. It is a tragedy that his life has been cut short, but I do feel fortunate to have known such a wonderful man.
Squadron Leader Newton and Babette Armstrong
4 Jun 2010: Dear Vicki, Tim, Ben and Stephanie. So terribly sorry to hear the news. We always remember our short time together as neigbours in Canberra and hearing Nigel's yachting exploits. Our thoughts go out to you at this difficult time. Best wishes.

LCDR Jodie Wilkinson
4 Jun 2010: My deepest sympathy to the Coates Family. RADM Coates has been taken too soon but leaves the legacy of having a positive impact on so many of us. He was my first seagoing Commanding Officer when I joined HMAS Canberra as a new MIDN right out of the Royal Australian Naval College. I appreciated his leadership and encouragement and his invite to join his team at the twilight sailing races. And then his friendly greetings each time I've seen him in passing throughout my career. He is a great leader who will be sadly missed.
CPONPC Denis McKenna
4 Jun 2010: My condolences for your loss. I had served under the Admiral on 2 occasions, he was truly a great leader of men. The RAN, and Australia has lost a great leader, and a very decent man.
Leading Seaman Roger Isaaks
4 Jun 2010: My sincere condolences to Mrs. Coates, Tim, Ben, Stephanie, Mac, Gwenda, Hugh and Sandy during this difficult time. I was grateful and honoured to have the opportunity to serve under RADM Coates during his tenure as the Fleet Commander. Even during his busy schedule as the Fleet Commander, he always made the time for his staff, be it a birthday celebration, a farewell or just a staff get-together. He was an inspiration to me and I am extremely saddened by his passing. We will miss you Sir.
Retired LEUT
4 Jun 2010: My sincere condolences to the Coates family and the greater Navy family. Nigel Coates was one of the best officers I had the pleasure of meeting, a true inspiration and a genuine leader. He was one of the good ones.
LEUT Sandra Fraser
4 Jun 2010: I was at ADFA with (then) CMDR Coates and he was a great inspiration for us MIDN. I was also lucky enough to do the 1994 Sydney to Hobart with him and he was a great Navigator, a reassuring leader when I was scared silly and also a very good sport. Our Skipper, a Chief told him the story of how the AB's would go below to make fresh Kye (chocolate drink) for the Officers of the Watch. Fresh Kye was foamy and rather than go to the effort of making fresh the sailors would just use the old Kye which had been sitting warm in the pot on the stove and froth it up in their mouth and spit it back in the cup just before handing it over to the OOW. This was the first time CMDR Coates had heard about this and he was horrified thinking of all the times he'd drunk "fresh" Kye. He was such a good sport about it though and we all had a great laugh. He was my first exposure to a Senior Naval Officer as a MIDN and then was my Admiral at Fleet when I had to brief him every Monday. He was truly a great leader and someone I always looked up to. I send my deepest condolences.
Heather Parry
4 Jun 2010: I met Nigel when I worked with Vickie at HMAS Watson in the mid 1980s. Although we lost contact I have thought of them both often over the intervening years and was truly saddened when I heard of Nigel's illness and now passing. A fine man who will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies Vickie to yourself and your family.
Rod Williams, ex CPOCSM
4 Jun 2010: A Leader of men by example, condolences to the family, rest in peace Sir.
LSCK Kurt Gallagher
4 Jun 2010: My thoughts and prayers go out to the Coates family. I only had the chance to have a few chats with RADM Coates while serving in CN's Office, in that time he came across as a true gentleman and a well respected officer. Rest in Peace Sir.
CMDR Tim Watson
4 Jun 2010: Please accept my sincere condolences. Not only was The Admiral an outstanding officer, from all accounts, he was a wonderful husband, father and son. The one week I spent with Admiral Coates in South East Asia in 2008 will last me a life time. I then found out how a commander should indeed command. Rest in Peace Admiral.
FLGOFF Alastair Lyon & Jessica Aldred
4 Jun 2010: Our most heartfelt sympathy to the Coates family at this tragic time - We will always remember his great sense of humour and his ability to make everyone feel they were his equal. If just a fraction of Nigel's wonderful qualities live on in the rest of us, the world will be a much better place.
LEUT Paul 'Gabby' Hayes
4 Jun 2010: A very sad day for the Coates and Navy family. A truly remarkable leader who I had the pleasure of working with over many years. We will remember him.

4 Jun 2010: I would just like to say that I am so very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of regularly interacting with RADM Coates whilst I was posted to CN's office. He was a truly beautiful person who transcended all ranks and always treated me as an adult with fairness and respect. I know nothing can ease your pain but take comfort in knowing wh at an incredible human being he was. I am better person for having known him and he will be truly missed.
Geoff Woods (JE78)
4 Jun 2010: As a "J1," sitting opposite the then "Chief Midshipman" Coates in the RANC Scran Hall way back in 1978, was truly an education. I was amazed at how someone could eat a bowl of cereal with such finesse. He was a natural. A few years later I was grateful for his help, when, after a brief cameo at his family home, trying to impress his sister, it was time for me to leave, and my car wouldn't start. So at 2am Sandy woke Nigel up from his sleep, who very graciously helped, in the rain, with a push start. It is one of my fond memories. I am grateful to have known Admiral Nigel Coates. My sincere condolences to the Coates family.
LCDR Dave Jones, HMAS Creswell
4 Jun 2010: I have very fond memories of my time at ADFA as OC P&RT under Nigels leadership. I have since often used his fine example in my instruction to officers under training. I have appreciated greatly the open and sincere friendship he has always expressed regardless of rank or station. Please accept our sympathy at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Dave and Sue.
Carl Oberg
4 Jun 2010: Please accept my sincere condolences for all the family in this difficult time. My earliest memories of ADM Coates include a presentation that Nigel and Vickie gave to the young Midshipmen at ADFA in 1990. As a couple you presented an honest and sobering account of what life would be like, both professionally and personally, in the Navy. To an 18 year old kid, this was very confronting! (but very much needed). In the early days of the Defence Academy, he was the only RAN officer who I was able to identify as a role model. As such, I enjoyed following his senior career through to Fleet Commander. So much more to offer - cruelly taken - much too early.
Peter Naughton, RANC Classmate
4 Jun 2010: My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Coates family at this time. I joined the the Navy with Nigel and we were both in Jervis Division at the RANC. Rest in peace.

3 Jun 2010: I served as Nigel's Buffer in Darwin during our Red Sea deployment 1992. He was a Naval Officer who demonstrated respect to his subordinates, an unswerving devotion to the cause, and a heartfelt compassionate concern for the morale and welfare of all who served under him. My sincerest condolances to the Coates family. Yours Aye.
Andrew Boatman (RANC SE 1979)
3 Jun 2010: I have vivid memories, now nigh thirty years old, of a vivacious, dashing and inspirational leader - ducking in and out of workplaces where even more-junior young Naval Officers - like me - were learning their craft. He had a brilliance that was evident in everything that he turned his hand to. Vickie, condolences to you and your family, in this time of sadness.
Don Sewell and Polly Reynolds

The finest Officer, he was an exemplary Leader and an outstanding Commanding Officer. We, and the wider NAVY community will miss him dearly. Vicky and his family are in our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult of times.

I found sir to be an inspirational leader and one who was always eager to pass on his knowledge and he was always willing to listen to your point of view and accept what you had to say. I know especially my wife and I will miss him, they last met in 2006 at Government House.

3 Jun 2010: As my first Commanding Officer at sea, RADM Coates set me a benchmark for leadership early on in my career. LCDR Phillipa Hay
3 Jun 2010: Dear Mrs Coates and family. In 1993/4, then CMDR Coates as CO ADFA made a lasting impression upon both myself and my Navy classmates as a true Officer and gentleman. . For me personally, he was instrumental in saving my flegling Naval career by determining that a "breaking of the rules" during an Army-orientated exercise was actually "Midshipmen showing initiative". Only a truely fine Officer of the Senior Service could so easily brush aside Army protocol with such memorable style! My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Sincerely.
LCDR Steve Sewell
3 Jun 2010: A quintessential gentleman and exceptional Naval Officer. My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are extended to his family.

I first met RADM Coates when I was serving in ADFA when he was the Chief Instructor and I was the Squadron Sargeant Major of a Bravo Squadron. I remember him on numerous occasion attending my instructional periods with his assessment form in hand and giving the critical eye. I recall with some humour when he lost his finger sailing down at Creswell, I am sure it wasn't at the time. RADM Coates was always approachable and genuine and in all his dealings regardless of what rank you had. I would say without exception he was one of the easiest Senior Officers that you could talk too. My families thoughts are with you and your at this time.

2 Jun 2010: My deepest condolences to your family, RADM Coates was a great leader and role model for junior officers like me. He was also a great sailor, and he will be missed both in the fleet and out on the waters of the harbour. Know that the thoughts of many of us are with you in this difficult time. God bless.

2 Jun 2010: Please let me start by saying that I am truly saddened and shocked to learn of the passing of RADM Nigel Coates. I only served with RADM Coates briefly from Jan 2002 on HMAS Anzac for 4-5 months. But I can say with my hand on my heart, he was one of the most professional, friendly & approachable CO's that I had ever had the pleasure to serve with. Our paths did cross again during my time on HMAS Perth in 2007 one day at sea off the coast of Jervis Bay when he paid the ship a visit in his role as Maritime Commander. He not only remembered me, but we had good ten minute conversation as though we were old friends at a barbeque get together. That is the kind of friendly approachable man he was, here was Nigel a RADM & me a LSBM, it was as though he saw the person , not the rank as he talked with you. The Navy will now somehow be more empty & a little bit less enjoyable without RADM Coates as a part of it.

2 Jun 2010: I had the short pleasure of meeting RADM Coates on one of our northern illegal fishing patrols. He displayed honesty, respect, intelligence and humour when talking to the crew's senior sailors. While chatting with others today at HMAS Waterhen, all agree that a good man has passed.
