Other Entitlements and Commitments
Uniforms
You will be issued with summer and winter Navy uniforms for working (everyday wear), ceremonial, and physical training. This will include a tracksuit, running shoes, boots, hats and caps, underwear and sleepwear. You will also be issued towels and sheets. You will be responsible for the cleanliness and presentation of all of these kit items and be required to replace them if they are damaged or lost.
You will be wearing the uniform of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The RAN has a proud tradition of service, and is recognised throughout the world for its professional excellence, therefore you are required to maintain your uniform to a high standard and wear it with pride. This means that you will learn to wash, iron, stow and wear your uniform correctly at all times, and at the standard required at Recruit School.
You will be required to wash and dry your own uniforms in the facilities provided in your accommodation block. Your ironing board and iron will be stowed in your cabin. Some uniform items such as ceremonial uniforms may be dry-cleaned at your expense.
Meals
You will be entitled to three meals a day to be eaten in the Junior Sailors Mess at HMAS Cerberus. This is a cafeteria style dining area and meals are at set times and duration.
Leave and Visitors
Taking leave and having visitors on board during recruit training is a privilege and not a right. You will be entitled to have visitors during the weekend of Week 3, on submission of a written request, providing you are not required for duty or undertaking training.
You will also be entitled to take short leave on the weekend of Week 4 providing you are not required for duty and you are not involved in training or some other activity. In any case training requirements take precedence, and short notice commitments may preclude the granting of leave and preclude visiting rights.
Duties
In addition to the normal working week Recruits are required to keep duties. This means that every fourth day regardless of weekends and public holidays Recruits are required to work outside normal working hours. Leave is not permitted when personnel are on duty.
Telephone Calls
There are 10 public telephones available for Recruits to use, and two Internet kiosks. Recruits may be contacted on the Block telephones (see School Contacts for Families).
