Australia's national sail training ship Young Endeavour is visiting Mackay as part of her 2010 Voyage Program. 24 young Australians from around the country will sail the ship into Mackay, completing an eleven day voyage along the eastern coast of Australia.
The captain and crew invite students, teachers and members of the local community to join us during a free public Open Day from 1:00-4:00pm on Sunday 11 July at Mackay Marina Village. Visit the ship, meet our youth crew and find out how to get onboard for the voyage of a lifetime.
A voyage on STS Young Endeavour sees youth crew take part in all aspects of sailing a square‑rigged vessel. During each voyage youth crew spend approximately five nights under sail at sea and five nights at anchor, cover an average of 400nm and actively participate in approximately 80 hours of ship’s watches. They participate in routine rounds, helm and navigation, as well as sail handling, working aloft and assisting the chef.
Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 youth onboard STS Young Endeavour. Each voyage provides participants with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience that increases self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills and creates a strong sense of community responsibility.
Voyages onboard STS Young Endeavour are open to all Australians aged 16-23. Applications for voyages during 2011 open in August. For more information please visit www.youngendeavour.gov.au.
