Samoan VIPs check out Manoora

26 August 2008

HMAS Manoora, during her recent port visit to Samoa, was privileged to be visited by the Honourable Misa Telefoni, Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa. Under the command of CMDR Paul Mandziy, RAN, Manoora hosted the Deputy Prime Minster onboard with a lunch in the Wardroom and a tour of the ship.

"The interactions and discussions between Australian and Samoan representatives, revolved around common themes and understandings", said CMDR Mandziy.

Also in attendance during the ship visit was the Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Matt Anderson.

"The extended visit of Manoora [in Samoa] has helped strengthen Australia's relationship between the two countries", said Mr Anderson

Manoora's port visit to Samoa coincided with the Pacific Island Forum, founded in 1971. This platform allows for Australia to interact with 15 other Pacific self governing states, regarding common issues and strengthening regional ties.

"This port visit was a great opportunity for the crew to engage our regional neighbours", said CMDR Mandziy.

After all the formalities were complete, Manoora's motto, "In War and In Peace", rang true, with members of Manoora's crew volunteering to put their skills and training to go use, by conducting some much need maintenance on a Samoan children's refuge. The refuge is utilised to house disadvantage and abused Samoan children. After a desperately needed fresh coat of paint and some brand new cabinets installed, the children's refuge was unrecognisable. The staff and children are extremely appreciative to the Manoora's crew member's who took the time and effort to help them out.

Manoora is currently conducting a passage to Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to Fleet Base East in late September.
