Sea Patrol comes to Ipswich

21 January 2011

Sailors from the Royal Australian Navy are lending a hand to the people of Ipswich as a part of Operation Queensland Flood Assist.

Sailors worked in suburban Karalee clearing rubbish, mud, and damaged property following the flooding of the suburb last week.

Able Seaman Medic (AB) David Cantelli from HMAS Cerberus near Melbourne is a part of the Joint Health Task Force sent up to assist the people of Queensland with recovery from the floods.

AB Cantelli said the local people were very appreciative of the help they were receiving.

"I saw this unfold on TV and I expected to see devastation but what I didn't expect to see was people's belongings and their whole lives on their lawns," he said.

"We still get all the Sea Patrol jokes but they love the help, they are very warm and really appreciate what we are doing for them."

"We will be here for as long as we are needed."

Defence Force personnel, based temporarily at RAAF Base Amberley, are being sent daily to areas around Ipswich to assist in recovery and restoration activities.
