Success Answers The Call
18 August 2009
While on the transit for the Indonesian Fleet Review, HMAS Success (CMDR Tony Rayner) was called upon to support the search for the missing aircraft of flight CG44684 over the Kokoda track of Papua New Guinea.
Detouring from the original track, Success was the first on scene with her embarked Sea King helicopter taking off at first light to assist in the search for the missing aircraft.
With poor weather conditions over the high mountain ridges the Sea King was unable to land close to the crash site and was utilised as logistical support for the next two days. Success’ Medical Officer LCDR Simon Winder was taken to 1500 feet below the crash site and had to endure the steep trek up to the aircraft to assist local agencies with their investigations.
CMDR Rayner was extremely proud of the ship’s company with many working through the night to prepare for every contingency for the search whilst steaming at best speed towards Port Moresby.
