HMAS Sydney got a taste of Broadway when it staged the worldwide media launch of the new musical ‘An Officer and a Gentleman.’
The musical, based on the 1982 film which starred Richard Gere, will hold its world premiere in Sydney next May, and today New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell announced the coup on the flight deck of HMAS Sydney.
Australia’s entertainment media were welcomed onboard the Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigate, where iconic Australian singer Doug Parkinson treated them to a rendition of the show’s hit song ‘Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong.’
The original screen writer of the Academy Award-winning film, Douglas Day Stewart, was joined by Producers Sharleen Cooper Cohen and John Frost, and Grammy nominated composers Ken Hirsch and Robin Lerner, onboard Sydney for the launch.
Ms Cooper Cohen said the Royal Australian Navy provided the perfect backdrop for the event.
“The fact that Sydney is home to one of Australia’s naval bases is one reason that it’s a perfect place to premiere a show that celebrates the Navy officer,” she said.
The City of Sydney was chosen over London and New York to host next years premiere.
