Sydney shaves for Charity
8 October 2007
Before HMAS Sydney (CMDR Guy Holthouse) deployed to North America, a number of her crew had a close shave for charity.
While at anchor in Jervis Bay Sydney's crew took part in "Shave for a Cure", a fundraising event for the Leukaemia Foundation.
The event was organised by the Bosun Department onboard Sydney, to show their support for SMN Michael Taylor whose aunt was recently diagnosed with Leukaemia.
LS Ben McNeil and AB Mathew Cunningham provided entertainment and reassurance to the 20 or so brave sailors who arrived to sacrifice their locks of hair.
The night was highly successful raising close to $1000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. The event was also successful in boosting the morale of SMN Taylor, HMAS Sydney and leukaemia sufferers.
"There is no better feeling than being a part of a crew that comes together in a time of need. Talk about Navy values", AB Thomas Kelly said.
Sydney will be conducting Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) trials at the Pacific Missile Range Facility off Hawaii. During the deployment she will also be conducting trials at the Canadian Naval Underwater Testing range, at Nanoose Bay near Vancouver. Sydney will also visit a number of Canadian and American ports, before returning to home in mid December.
