Commander John Cowan has been Commanding Officer of HMAS Sirius since December 2008. During his tenure he led the ship through many exercises including Exercise Bersama Lima, Bersama Shield, Fleet Concentration Period East and West, Anti Submarine Warfare Exercises, Principal Warfare Officer Sea weeks, as well as transferring copious amounts of fuel throughout the Fleet around Australia.

Commander Cowan handed the weight of Command of HMAS Sirius to Commander David McDonald on 21 May 2010.
