Little Brodie Hammond's father died a hero, so it was a proud day when she presented an award in his memory at HMAS Waterhen at Waverton on July 6.

The John Hammond Annual Memorial Award is presented annually for outstanding service attitude and promotion of naval camaraderie and it was the first time Brodie was old enough to present it.

The recipient this year was LS Shane Howell.

John Hammond was a LS ETP3 who served in the Royal Australian Navy from January 8, 1986 until June 26 1998. Before discharge, he was a member of HMAS Waterhen.

LS Hammond was killed on Day 1999 after coming to the aid of a member of public who was being robbed.

Brodie attended the presentation at HMAS Waterhen with LS Hammond's widow, Mrs Sharon Lockyer.

In the commendation, Russ Crawford, OIC Mine Warfare Faculty said: "LS Howell is an intelligent and resourceful sailor who signifies exceptional knowledge in the field of mine warfare.

"His well-developed interpersonal skills enable him to impart his extensive knowledge and experience effortlessly.

"LS Howell's affable personality and quick wit contribute to a high level of morale maintained within the faculty, while his outstanding work ethic ensures tasks are completed to the highest standard in minimal time.

"In addition to his employment within the Mine Warfare Faculty, LS Howell has asserted himself enthusiastically as the HMAS Waterhen Junior Sailors' Mess President, demonstrating initiative and resourcefulness, and providing a high quality role model to junior personnel.

"His recent contributions in providing assistance to the Scrap Iron Flotilla for day demonstrated his commitment and dedication to the values of the Royal Australian Navy both within and outside his work environment."
