Captain Mark Hill, Commanding Officer of HMAS Cerberus, has thanked the community for making this year’s Open Day another huge success, in the establishment’s 90 year history.

Approximately 6,000 people interested in the Royal Australian Navy, a Navy career or just wanting a great family day out were part of the fun and festivities at the base.

CAPT Hill said visitors were treated to an action packed day of helicopter winching displays, aerial performances, firefighting displays, skydivers, precision drill displays, the Navy Band, vintage and military vehicles, training school exhibitions and more.

Making it a complete family day, the little ones were entertained with rides and amusements and everyone was fascinated by the military demonstrations on offer.

“It was thrilling to see so many in the community interested in the Navy and showing their support to all in Cerberus through attending today,” CAPT Hill said.

“This year’s Open Day was about engaging with the community and strengthening our relationship with the people of greater Melbourne.

“It was a unique opportunity to showcase the highly effective training conducted in Cerberus, and to promote the diverse range of challenging yet exceptionally satisfying careers in the Australian Defence Force.

“I also thank local media and community websites for their promotion of our event and contribution to making the open day another huge success.

“The RAN Band provided a breathtaking close to the day with the performance of a Ceremonial Sunset and Beat to Quarters. This fittingly leads into the opening of Navy Week Victoria 2011 and celebrates 90 years of HMAS Cerberus and 100 years of the Royal Australian Navy.”
