Week 1 - Moran Division Intake 269

4 May 2009

Welcome to the 137 new recruits that joined Moran Division on 4 May 2009. All recruits received an induction brief prior to being shown Moran divisional accommodation where they will be working and sleeping for the next 11 weeks. The first full day of Recruit School is a big eye opener for many as it starts at five o’clock in the morning and it is non stop from there. After breakfast, the recruits received an introduction to Moran divisional and instructional staff and a brief on the divisional system. They were then allocated into the classes of ANZAC, ARUNTA, WARRAMUNGA, PARRAMATTA, and BALLARAT & STUART. All classes are named after Anzac frigates.

After these formalities, the classes commenced their programs starting with a trip to the hairdressers, health centre, clothing store and learnt basic drill movements. The first week of recruit training primarily involves administrative work. Recruits receive many briefs on subjects such as Equity and Diversity, Police, Passports, Security and Pay. They also have an introduction to Physical Training and receive a dental check up.

Recruits are also required in this first week to undergo the RAN swim test which has four components including a three meter safety jump, a ten meter under water swim, a 50 meter lap of the pool utilising a safety stroke and 15 minutes tread water. The recruits will also attempt their fitness test this week. For those recruits that are not successful at passing these two requirements then they will be required to attend additional PT sessions until they are successful.

Many recruits can find the commencement of training at Recruit School quite daunting and several will suffer from homesickness and will miss family and friends. Divisional Staff are well informed on how to assist and support these recruits. All parents, partners, friends are encouraged to keep regular contact and support their loved ones. An information letter will be sent to the recruit's nominated Next of Kin that provides contact details of both staff and recruits whilst they are under training at Recruit School.
