World’s greatest shave a big Success

29 March 2009

The ship’s company of HMAS Success (CMDR Simon Brown) threw its full support behind the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave on 25 March.

The event was coordinated by POET Danny McCall, who considered it a great opportunity to raise some money for this worthwhile charity prior to Success’ deployment to South East Asia.

In all, thirteen willing participants lost their locks during a BBQ lunch held on the flight deck for this great cause.

All eyes were on the Executive Officer, LCDR Donna Muller, who paid the price for mentioning that if a certain figure was reached she would be willing to lose her locks.

Assistance from SBLT Nick Walczak’s mother as the guest hairdresser ensured that the XO did not receive too harsh a shearing.

A total of $2845.70 was donated by the ship’s company, including sponsorship from family and friends.

The funds Success raised will help the Leukaemia Foundation to continue providing practical care and support to patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

It will also fund research into better treatments and hopefully cures. A total of over $7 million was raised nationwide as part of the World’s Greatest Shave Event

Two days later, Success was farewelled from Fleet Base East by friends and family. Success’ deployment involves participation in the International Fleet Review in China and Exercise Bersama Shield before returning to Sydney in June.
