Captain Matthew Shand

CAPT Matthew Shand

Captain Matthew Shand was born and educated in Newcastle, NSW. Upon completion of Year 12 in 1990 he joined the Royal Australian Naval College, graduating at the end of that year. He then undertook pilot training flying both the CT-4 at Point Cook and Pilatus PC-9 at RAAF Pearce. After gaining his Wings Matthew conducted his helicopter training on the AS-350B Squirrel helicopter at RAAF Fairbairn before joining 723 Squadron to fly the navalised variant.

From 1993 to 1994 Matthew served as the Flight Pilot in HMAS Sydney (IV) and HMAS Newcastle and, in 1995, the AS-350B Detachment Commander onboard HMAS Darwin. Areas deployed to during this period included the Middle East, Asia and the South West Pacific.

In 1996 Matthew conducted the Royal Air Force’s helicopter instructor’s course flying the Gazelle helicopter at RAF Shawbury. Upon completion he joined 702 Squadron, Royal Navy, flying the Lynx Mark 3 helicopter from both Royal Navy Air Station Portland and Royal Navy Air Station Yeovilton. While at 702 Squadron Matthew gained his A2 instructor category and served as both the Number Two and Lead within the Royal Navy’s Lynx Pairs Display Team.

In 2000 Matthew returned to 723 Squadron for a short stint to instruct before in 2001 being posted to Staff Course at Weston Creek, where he graduated with a Masters in Management (Defence Studies) and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies.  Following this he spent 14 months as a Staff Officer in Capability Development Group before in 2003 joining 805 Squadron as the Training Officer and converting to the SH-2G(A) Seasprite helicopter. In 2006  Matthew underwent an instructor’s refresher on the PC-9 before being appointed as the Senior Naval Officer and C Flight Commander at No. 2 Flying Training School, RAAF Pearce.

In 2009 Matthew was promoted to Commander and undertook a posting in Navy Strategic Command as the Deputy Director Navy Aviation before commencing in 2011 his appointment as the Commanding Officer of 723 Squadron based at HMAS Albatross, Nowra. Since then Matthew has performed a number of staff jobs including Director Navy Strategy Executive, Staff Officer Force Structure Review and as the Aviation Planner/N1 within Maritime Operations Branch. In 2016 he and his family moved to Sydney where he was appointed as the Executive Officer of HMAS Watson. In 2019 Matthew was promoted to Captain and appointed Commanding Officer, HMAS Kuttabul.
