Commander Christopher Unwin

CMDR Christopher Unwin

Commander Chris Unwin joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1995, initially completing a Science degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy and then subsequent Seaman Officer training at HMAS Watson. He went on to gain his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate aboard the Fremantle Class Patrol Boat HMAS Wollongong operating out of Darwin. Consolidation as an Officer of the Watch in the Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Adelaide saw him participate in operations off Timor Leste in 1999.

Commencing submarine training in late 2000, he was awarded the coveted “Dolphins” the following year. Highlights of the initial phase of his submarine career included several challenging deployments firstly as a junior officer in HMAS Dechaineux, then as Navigator and subsequently Operations Officer in HMAS Sheean. Navigating Sheean to the position where USS Missouri was anchored in Tokyo Bay for the 1945 Japanese Surrender remains an indelible memory.

Commander Unwin ventured ashore in 2007 to undertake a posting as an operations planner in the newly formed Headquarters Joint Operations Command, then located at Fairbairn in Canberra. In this position he gained exposure to a wide variety of domestic ADF operations within Australia, none of which had anything to do with submarines.

Commander Unwin rejoined the Submarine Force in 2008, relishing the opportunity to forge new ground as the inaugural Fleet Submarine Warfare Officer within the Submarine Sea Training Group. He then served as Executive Officer in HMAS Dechaineux from 2009-2011, in what was a challenging yet highly rewarding posting.

Following another period with Submarine Sea Training Group in 2012 he undertook the role of Head of Submarine Warfare Training at Training Authority Submarines from 2013-2014. During this time he also commenced reading for a Masters of Arts with the University of New South Wales - a task which is still underway. In mid-2015 he returned to sea as Executive Officer in HMAS Waller, restoring the boat to operational service after a significant defect rectification period.

Commander Unwin was appointed as Commanding Officer of the Armidale Class Patrol Boat HMAS Maryborough in 2017, returning to Darwin where his seagoing career commenced many years prior.
