CMDR John Wearne

Commander John Wearne was born and raised in Melbourne. His first involvement with Defence was when he joined the Army Reserve in 1979 and was subsequently commissioned in 1982 as an Infantry Officer. After working as a mathematics and physics master, Commander Wearne looked wider and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1986 as a training specialist.

He has served in a variety of training roles in HMAS Nirimba, HMAS Cerberus, KD Pelandok (RMN), HMAS Jervis Bay, HMAS Kanimbla, and HMAS Tobruk. In 1999 Commander Wearne served on exchange with the Royal Naval and returned in 2001 to the Royal Australian Naval College as the Head of Training Support and then as the Head of Management and Strategic Studies Faculty.

In 2005 Commander Wearne was posted to the Multi-National Force - Iraq as the Coalition’s Liaison Officer with the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq; subsequently he was awarded a US Army Commendation Medal.

On return Commander Wearne entered the world of strategic HR working in Defence Personnel, then as the Deputy Director Navy Workforce Management. In 2008 Commander Wearne joined the staff of the Australian Command and Staff College as both a member of the Directing Staff and Director of Studies - Navy. He went on to lead Navy’s training policy and capability acquisition projects area as the OIC of Training Centre - Canberra and Deputy Director Navy Training Policy.

Prior to returning to Creswell as the Training Commander, Commander Wearne was working to better align training across the ADF and provided oversight of Joint and rationalised training across Defence.

Commander Wearne is a Principal Training Specialist, a graduate of the University of Melbourne (Bachelor of Science and Graduate Diploma in Education). He has also completed Graduate Diplomas in Instructional Design (Deakin University 1992) and Evaluation (University of Melbourne 1994), a Master of Management and Defence Studies (University of Canberra), a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies (University of Wollongong) in 2004 and a Master of Business (University of NSW) in 2014. Commander Wearne is also a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College.

Commander Wearne's current role is as Training Commander at the Royal Australian Naval College. In this position he is responsible for delivery of officer Initial Entry Training and delivery of courses across the officers and sailors Leadership Management and Professional Development continuums.
