CMDR Simon Howard

Commander Simon Howard, CSM, RAN was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1974. He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1993, graduating from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics. He then commenced training as a Seaman Officer, specialising as a Principal Warfare Officer (Air Warfare) in 2004.

Throughout his career, Commander Howard has held a range of sea-going appointments. He served as an Officer of the Watch in HMA Ships Brunei, Hobart, Sydney and Newcastle, as the Air Intercept Control Officer in HMAS Melbourne and as the Assistant Operations Officer in HMAS Manoora. Following Principal Warfare Officer Course, he served as the Air Warfare Officer and Operations Officer in HMA Ships Melbourne and Toowoomba, and then as the Executive Officer of HMAS Toowoomba from 2008-2010.

Commander Howard has conducted several operational deployments, notably domestic border protection duties, the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands, and in the Middle East including during the RAN’s first Counter-Piracy operations within the Gulf of Aden and in the waters off the coast of Somalia in 2009.

In 2011, Commander Howard was awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal for his meritorious service as Executive Officer of HMAS Toowoomba.

Commander Howard has also held a range of staff appointments including Staff Officer Maritime Plans (as well as a period as Chief Staff Officer to Director General Plans) within Headquarters Joint Operations Command and Project Manager SEA 4000 (Air Warfare Destroyer) within Capability Development Group. Following promotion to Commander in January 2013, he served as the Deputy Director Performance Management (Navy Strategy Executive) within Navy Strategic Command and was appointed Staff Officer to the Chief of Navy 2013-14. Most recently, he served as Directing Staff at the Australian Command and Staff College.

A graduate of the Australian Command and Staff Course, Commander Howard holds a Master of Arts (Strategy and Policy) from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Maritime Studies from the University of Wollongong.

Commander Simon Howard served as the Commanding Officer of the Anzac Class Frigate HMAS Stuart from December 2015 until April 2016 and assumed Command of HMAS Parramatta on 16 April 2016.
