Commander Todd Glynn

CMDR Todd Glynn

Born and raised in Sydney, Todd Glynn entered the Royal Australian Naval College at HMAS Creswell in 1992 as a direct entry aviator, and commenced Pilot training in 1993 on 164 Pilots Course. Following graduation from number 2 Flying Training School (2FTS) and the Australian Defence Force Helicopter School (ADFHS), he completed the last MK50 Sea King ASW conversion and served as P2 in HMAS Success. During this inaugural posting, Success conducted deployments to RIMPAC, South East Asia and Bougainville.

Looking for opportunities to remain at sea, Todd was offered a loan posting to the Royal Navy flying the Lynx Mk 3. He commenced flying training at 702 Squadron during October 1998 and was subsequently appointed to be the Flight Pilot in HMS Glasgow, a Type 42 Destroyer deployed on a Five Power Defence Agreement (FPDA) deployment. During this deployment, Glasgow was tasked to support the lodgement of troops into East Timor as part of INTERFET. Todd remained in Glasgow for the rest of his time in the UK, later deploying to the South Atlantic in 2001 supporting British operations in Sierra Leone and Falkland Islands.

In November 2002, Todd completed the Army’s Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) course at Oakey and went on to train ab-initio students at 723 Squadron. He posted to 805 Squadron in February 2005 on promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

Following the suspension of Sea Sprite flying operations in 2006, Todd renewed his association with the Sea King and joined 817 Squadron as the Training Officer. This challenging period saw Todd substitute for the Flight Commander on HMAS Kanimbla during the coup in Fiji. Transitioning to the S-70B-2 Seahawk in September 2008, Todd served as the Flight Commander of HMAS Stuart where he received Fleet and CJTF633 Silver Commendations, before taking up the position of Training Officer 816 Squadron.

Selected for minor command of NUSQN 725 in July 2012, Todd completed MH-60R Training with the United States Navy’s east coast Fleet Replenishment Squadron (HSM-40) in August 2013. With NUSQN 725 flying and training in concert with USN Squadrons from HSMWINGLANT (Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic), he remained in the USA until October 2014 before returning to Australia to accept the unit’s new facilities at HMAS Albatross.

During 2016, Todd completed Command and Staff Course, receiving a Master of Military and Defence Studies from the Australian National University. Furthermore, he was promoted to Commander before taking the position of Director Training Authority Aviation in early 2017.

Todd assumed command of 816 Squadron on 14 December 2018.
