Commander Viktor Pilicic

CMDR Viktor Pilicic

Commander Victor Pilicic RAN graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College in 1987 as a Seaman Officer and served in HMA Ships Geelong, Parramatta, Westralia and Swan before specialising as a Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) in 1996; for a brief period he also served in HMA Submarine Ovens but quickly realised the “silent” service was not his forte.

As a PWO, Lieutenant Pilicic served in HMA Ships Torrens, Anzac and Warramunga (as a Lieutenant Commander); in these postings he deployed on Operation WARDEN to East Timor in 1999 and conducted border security activities during Operation RELEX II in 2001 off the North West Shelf and Christmas Island.

After a period ashore as Staff Officer 1 for SEA 4000 (Air Warfare Destroyer Project) at Maritime Development, Lieutenant Commander Pilicic took up his appointment as Executive Officer HMAS Kanimbla where he deployed to Operation SUMATRA ASSIST Banda Aceh, Indonesia; Kanimbla sailed on New Year’s Eve as part of Australia’s disaster relief effort following the devastating effects of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

Following successful completion of Joint Staff Course in 2006, Lieutenant Commander Pilicic joined Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) as a Staff Officer in Current Plans, before being appointed as Commanding Officer ARMIDALE Class Patrol Boat Crew Attack Four in 2008; during the period 2008-2009 in command of the crew and HMA Ships Albany and Larrakia, he was involved in border security operations and an opportunity to showcase Albany for the first time to its namesake city during a Freedom of Entry Ceremony.

Promoted to Commander in July 2010, subsequent appointments included Current Operations Officer Northern Command and Joint Task Force 639 (Operation RESOLUTE), Chief Staff Officer Patrol Boats and Commander Plans at Maritime Operations where he was responsible for the planning and coordination of Navy’s international exercise commitments.

In 2015 Commander Pilicic deployed on Operation MANITOU in Bahrain, as the Senior National Representative to the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and Deputy Maritime Operations Advisor to Commander Joint Task Force 633 (ADF National Command Middle Eastern Region). Here he gained a great insight into the CMF which comprises over thirty nations lead by the USA in a shared goal of promoting maritime security and countering terrorism in the maritime domain.

On returning from Bahrain, Commander Pilicic performed duties as a Current Operations Watch Commander at HQJOC; this was a short term prospect before assuming command of HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin, 16 December 2016.

Commander Pilicic holds a Masters in Maritime Studies through the University of Wollongong.
