Commodore Mal Wise

Commodore Malcolm KM Wise, OAM RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1985 from Mackay Queensland, and after one year at the Royal Australian Naval College at HMAS Creswell (Jervis Bay), was posted to the Australian Defence Force Academy (Canberra) in its inaugural year. There he completed his degree studies in 1987, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Oceanography). After returning to the Naval College in 1998, he was awarded the Royal Australian Naval College Jubilee Year Graduates Memorial Sword upon graduation.

On promotion to Sub Lieutenant he proceeded on exchange to Canada where he was awarded his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate (BWC) in HMCS Qu’APPELLE (Esquimalt) in 1990, before returning to Australia in November of the same year for six months in HMAS Jervis Bay (Sydney). After completing the Intermediate Navigation Course Lieutenant Wise joined HMAS Whyalla (Cairns) as Navigating Officer in May 1991. Having spent two years in Whyalla, he assumed Command of HMAS Balikpapan (Darwin) in October 1993. From there he joined HMAS Sydney (Sydney) as Navigating Officer for 1996, and in 1997 completed the RAN Long Navigation Course receiving the New Zealand prize for Navigation.

Lieutenant Wise completed the RAN Principal Warfare Officers' (PWO) Course in the latter half of the same year, and in January 1998 joined HMAS Success (Sydney) as Operations Officer. During this period Success deployed to East Timor on active service in response to the East Timor Crisis in 1999. In 2000 he assumed duties as the Port Services Manager for Sydney Harbour, where he qualified as a Naval Pilot (Nuclear) and supported harbour operations for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In October 2001 Lieutenant Commander Wise joined HMAS Darwin (Perth) as Executive Officer. He was promoted to Commander on 1 January 2003. During his tenure as Executive Officer, Darwin deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of the War in Iraq over a seven-month period in 2002/2003. On return from the Arabian Gulf Commander Wise was appointed Master Attendant based in Sydney. Commander Wise was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service as the Executive Officer of Darwin during the Iraq War in September 2003.

Commander Wise assumed Command of HMAS Ballarat in December 2005 and again deployed to the Arabian Gulf while in Command. On completion of his command in June 2007 he was selected for the Naval Command College (NCC) International Officers' program at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. After the college, Commander Wise completed follow on study at Salve Regina University, graduating with a Masters of International relations in December 2008. He was promoted to Captain on 1 January 2009, and after serving in Canberra in a capability development role he assumed Command of HMAS Perth (III) in 2011. Perth was the first of the Anzac class frigates to undergo the Anti Ship Missile Defence Upgrade. He then assumed duties as Surface Combatant Group Capability Manager for three years. He was promoted to Commodore and appointed as Commodore Warfare on 25 January 2016.
