LCDR Daniel Hodgkinson

Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson joined the RAN from Wollongong in September 1996 as an Electronic Technician, serving his first sea posting in HMAS Hobart (II) as the missile radar maintainer. As a junior sailor he attained the rank of Leading Seaman, achieving dual trade qualifications in Electronics and Aircraft Avionics. He completed shore postings in HMA Ships Kuttabul and Albatross, as well as several positions at 723 Squadron for the period up to 2005, at which time he accepted a commission and commenced mechanical engineering studies at the University of Wollongong.

Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson posted as Assistant Marine Engineer Officer in HMAS Kanimbla, serving on Operation PADANG ASSIST in 2009 and on Exercise RIMPAC in 2010.

Between 2011 and 2013 he was posted as Divisional Officer for the New Entry Officer Course, and as an instructor of the Junior Officer (now the Naval Officer) Leadership Course at HMAS Creswell, before undertaking further specialist engineering study at the University of New South Wales.

In 2014 Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson posted as the Deputy Marine Engineer Officer in HMAS Parramatta, serving on Operation’s SOLANIA and PARAPET, before transitioning to HMAS Warramunga as part of the Anti-Submarine Missile Defence upgrade program. In 2015 he was awarded the Marine Engineer Officer Charge Qualification and was recognised as a chartered professional engineer.

In 2016 Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson was involved in the analysis of the Future Naval Engineering Workforce, and the design and development of the Defence Seaworthiness Management System. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in January 2017 and posted as the Seaworthiness Manager of the SEA5000 Future Frigate Project within Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG).

Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson holds a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters of Systems Engineering and a Masters of Sustainment Management.

Lieutenant Commander Hodgkinson was selected as the Head - Officer Initial Training Faculty at the Royal Australian Naval College, assuming this role in December 2018.
