While most of us were safe and warm in our beds, Commander Stacey Porter recently spent an uncomfortable night sleeping rough to raise money and awareness of homelessness.

Commander Porter, the Commanding Officer of Navy Headquarters Tasmania, joined sixty local business leaders at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium for the St Vincent De Paul CEO Winter Sleepout. She says the Tasmania weather made for a difficult night.

“With nothing but two sheets of cardboard between me and the cold concrete, it was a pretty challenging night. The 'sleepers' and I shivered through a -3oC mid-winter night shrouded by Launceston’s notorious fog,” said Commander Porter.

“It was well worth it though, as $86,000 was raised, all of which will be used by the St Vincent de Paul Society to help the 2,500 people estimated to be homeless in Tasmania.
