Arctic Route Opens for Supertankers

This week, the first commercial supertanker succeeded in traversing the North East Passage reports the Telegraph. Carrying 70,000 tonnes of gas from Murmansk in Russia destined for Ningbo in China, the MV Baltica moved the difficult Northern Sea Route a step closer to rivalling the dominant Suez Canal in the south.

Dutch Send Walrus to Stop Pirates

The Royal Netherlands Navy will deploy one of its four Walrus class diesel submarines to NATO anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa reports Radio Netherland Worldwide.

The vessel will participate in the operation from the end of September to the end of November, monitoring communications between pirate vessels and their warlords on shore.

 

Drug Submarine Seized in Equador

BAE Awared New Contract for Nulka Anti-Ship Missile Decoy

The DMO has awarded BAE Systems a 12th successive annual contract to produce additional rounds for the Nulka soft kill anti-ship missile defence.

The AUD$40 million contract is to produce additional rounds for use by the Australian, United States and Canadian navies and will see production extended to 2013.

The Rise of the Asymmetric Anti Ship Missle Threat

A recent analysis piece in The Economist examines the rise of the asymmetric anti-ship missile and supersonic missile threat.  While the impact of asymmetric, subsonic missile threats has already been made clear by Hizbullah's attack on an Israeli corvette more than 15km offshore, the threat of new supersonic missiles such as the Sizzler is both less clear and more deadly.
