CAPT Terry Morrison

Captain Terry Morrison joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1991, graduating from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1993. After Maritime Warfare training, he was awarded his Bridge Warfare Certificate in 1995 in the Guided Missile Destroyer HMAS Hobart. He consolidated his training in the Destroyer Escort HMAS Swan in 1996 and after completing the Air Intercept Controller’s (AIC) course, he returned to Hobart for three years as the AIC. 

In 2000, Terry completed his Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) training, specialising in Air Warfare and served as the Gunnery Officer in the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG) HMAS Melbourne from 2000-2002; deploying to the Solomon Islands for Operation TREK. In December 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and took Command of the Fremantle Class Patrol Boat (FCPB) HMAS Geraldton; conducting Operations CRANBERRY, RELEX I and II and returned to the Solomon Islands for Operation ANODE. After relinquishing Command mid-2004, he deployed to Iraq for Operation SLIPPER in Command of the Australian Navy Training Team, tasked with rebuilding and training the Iraqi Navy and for this, he was awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service.

On his return to Australia, Terry served as a PWO instructor at HMAS Watson, before joining Sea Training Group as the Fleet Direction Officer and Operations Officer to Commodore Flotillas. In addition to his core role in preparing ships for operations, he deployed for Operation RAMP (evacuation of Australians from Lebanon during the Israel-Lebanon war in 2006) and assumed Command of the FCPB HMAS Gawler for an Operational Relief requirement, deploying for Operation RESOLUTE. In December 2006, he returned to sea as the Executive Officer of HMAS Newcastle (FFG), then the Task Group Commander.

After completing the 2009 Australian Command and Staff Course, Terry returned to Sea Training Group in 2010 as the Fleet Executive Officer. In 2012 he posted to the Chief Information Officer Group in Canberra, to work in ICT projects, prior to assuming Command of HMAS Darwin (FFG) in August 2013. While in Command of Darwin, he participated in the International Fleet Review and deployed to the Middle East Region in support of Operation SLIPPER and MANITOU and for this he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. After his Command of Darwin, Terry posted to Surface Force Command as the Capability Support Manager to the Adelaide Class FFGs and in July 16 he was promoted to Captain and assumed the role of Director Destroyers, Project Sponsor for the Hobart Class Destroyers.

In June 2019, Terry assumed Command of HMAS Canberra (III).
