CMDR Gerald Savvakis

Commander Gerald Savvakis, RAN ADC, joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Junior Recruit through HMAS Leeuwin in June 1981. After qualifying as a Signalman, Commander Savvakis served at sea in a number of ships including HMA Ships Tobruk, Stalwart, Jervis Bay, Darwin and Parramatta, and Shore Establishments including Commander Australian Naval Support Command (COMAUSNAVSUP), HMAS Kuttabul and HMAS Moreton before discharging in 1992 to pursue academic studies through the Queensland University.

After a four year break in service, Commander Savvakis re-joined the RAN in January 1996 as a Midshipmen and completed officer training at HMAS Creswell as part of New Entry Officers' Course (NEOC) 16. Commander Savvakis was selected to join HMAS Perth (DDG) under the Enhanced Studies Scheme where he gained his primary qualification and performed the duties as an Officer of the Watch (OOW).

Commander Savvakis served as the Navigating Officer of HMAS Gladstone before completing the RAN’s Surface Combatant Navigation Course (SCNC) and Principle Warfare Officer (PWO) Course qualifying as a specialist Deep Draft Navigator and Nuclear Powered Warship Pilot.

Commander Savvakis has navigated HMA Ships Sydney and Newcastle, and has completed a number of operational deployments in support of major operations and international exercises including, but not limited to, Operation FALCONER, Operation CATALYST, Operation SLIPPER, Operation RELEX, Exercise SINGAROO, GOODWILL Ex, and the JMSDF International Fleet Review.

Commander Savvakis performed the duties as Staff Officer Navigation & Seamanship where he was instrumental in the introduction of Digital Charts and ECPINS into the RAN, and was selected for command of AWARE ONE, one of 21 rotational crews for the Armidale Class Patrol Boat fleet in 2007. While in command of AWARE ONE, Commander Savvakis commissioned HMAS Maryborough and was selected to perform the duties as the AWARE Divisional Co-ordinator.

After two years as the Port Services Manager and Naval Pilot, FBE, Commander Savvakis briefly assumed the role as the OIC of the RAN’s Bridge Simulator at HMAS Watson in 2010 before joining HMAS Success as the Executive Officer in 2011. Commander Savvakis attended the Australian Command and Staff Course (ACSC) in 2014, where he was awarded a Masters of Military and Defence Studies through the Australian National University (ANU).

Upon completion of his studies at ANU, Commander Savvakis assumed the duties as the Chief of Staff to the Australian Fleet Battle Staff and participated in a number of operational deployments including a four month rotation to Bahrain as the Commander Task Force 150 Operations Officer.

In addition to his qualifications from ANU, Commander Savvakis is a fully qualified senior Naval Pilot (NPW) and holds a Post Graduate Degree in Maritime Logistics Management from the University of Tasmania. Commander Savvakis is a member of the Nautical Institute and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

In January 2019 Commander Savvakis assumed Command of HMAS Moreton and the Senior Naval Officer South East Queensland.
