CMDR Glenn Williams

Commander Glenn Williams, OAM, RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1993, graduating from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995. He served in HMA Ships Gawler, Cessnock, Balikpapan and Adelaide between 1996 and 1999. This was followed by postings to HMA Ships Ipswich, Gawler and Bunbury as the Navigating Officer where he was involved in several regional deployments as well as border protection duties.

In 2002 he completed the Principal Warfare Officer Course specialising in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Electronic Warfare and Communications. He then returned to sea in HMAS Newcastle as the Communications Officer. Highlights of his tenure included deployments to Operation CATALYST in support of operations in Iraq as well as Exercise RIMPAC 2004.

In 2005 Commander Williams joined the staff at the Principle Warfare Officer faculty at HMAS Watson as the Communications Instructor, this was followed by a posting to Fleet Headquarters as the Deputy Commander Fleet Communications from 2006 to 2007. From 2008 through to 2010 he was the Deputy Director Navy Communications at Navy Communications and Information Warfare (NCIW) Branch within Navy Headquarters.

In 2010 Commander Williams was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the RAN Tactical Electronic Warfare Support Squadron, which was followed by the Australian Command and Staff College in 2013.

Commander Williams returned to NCIW Branch in 2014 where he assumed the role of Director Navy C3 until mid-2018. In October of that year he was posted to Joint Capabilities Group as part of the Defence Space Directorate within Information Warfare Division as Deputy Director Navigation Warfare and PNT. 

Commander Williams has completed post graduate Defence and Military Studies at the Australian National University and as well Information Systems studies at the University of NSW. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for service to Navy Communications, and has received a Deputy Chief of Navy Commendation for his time at NCIW Branch.

Commander Williams assumed command of HMAS Cairns on 16 December 2019.
