CMDR Marcus Buttler

Commander Marcus Buttler RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1992 through the Australian Defence Force Academy. He has previously served as the Executive officer of Her Majesty’s Australian (HMA) Ships Parramatta, Ballarat, Labuan and Brunei.

Commander Buttler served as a Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) in HMA Ships Canberra, Arunta, Stuart and Sydney, and also in Her Majesty’s Ship Cornwall whilst on exchange with the Royal Navy. Whilst in the United Kingdom he was also posted to the Flag Officer Sea Training organisation in Plymouth and the PWO Faculty at HMS Collingwood. Similarly, in Australia, he has undertaken training roles in the Sea Training Group and PWO Faculty at HMAS Watson.

His Staff appointments include Communications Officer in the Combined Maritime Forces Bahrain, Deputy Director Navy People Career Management Agency, Assistant to the Chief of Staff Navy Strategic Command and Director Navy Strategy Executive.

Commander Buttler holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of New South Wales, a Masters of Business Management from the University of Portsmouth and a Masters in Military Studies from the Australian National University.

Commander Buttler assumed command of HMAS Melbourne (III) on 28 May 2018.
