Commander Mark Daly joined the RAN as a Seaman Officer in 1987. His Bridge Watch-keeping training was carried out in HMA Ships Bunbury and Derwent and he was awarded his Bridge Warfare Certificate in HMAS Swan in 1990. Consolidation training was carried out in HMAS Westralia and HMAS Shepparton prior to his assumption of duties as the Naval Air Station Security Officer, HMAS Albatross, in October 1993.

The following year saw Daly return to HMAS Swan as the Communications Officer before he later transferred to the Active Naval Reserve. Daly returned to the Permanent Naval Forces in early 2001 and later that year assumed duties as the Executive Officer in HMAS Geelong. In early 2004 he commenced training as a submariner, undertaking his sea-phase in HMAS Dechaineux.

Daly then served as the Officer Commanding Navy Squadron at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 2005, prior to his selection as the Executive Officer in the then soon to be commissioned auxiliary replenishment vessel HMAS Sirius. In October 2008 Daly assumed duties as the ADF’s Senior Military Recruiting Officer in Western Australia and for his efforts in that role he was subsequently awarded an ADF Silver Commendation.

In early 2010, Daly commenced six months of intensive Bahasa Indonesian language training in order for him to undertake the Indonesian Navy’s Command and Staff Course (SESKO AL) in Jakarta. After graduating from SESKO AL in December 2011, Daly and his family returned to Australia where he undertook preparatory training prior to assuming an Armidale Class Patrol Boat Command (Attack Six) on 25 May 2012.

On completion of his Command tenure in June 2014, Daly was posted back to the Submarine Force for a period of refresher training prior to returning to sea and attaining his submarine qualification in September 2015. Daly then completed the Submarine Warfare Officer’s Course in December 2016 and subsequently joined HMAS Dechaineux as the Sonar Officer in May 2017.

Daly was selected for promotion in December 2017 upon assumption of his duties as a Watch Commander at the ADF’s Headquarters Joint Operations Command. After a twelve month period serving in the ADF’s strategic headquarters, Daly returned to the West where he assumed duties as the Senior Officer HMAS Rankin on 18 December 2018.
