Commander Phillip Henry

Commander Phillip Andrew Henry was born in Roxburgh, New Zealand in 1968. He initially joined the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserves in 1985, before joining the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1989 as a Seaman Officer. After initial training, he served in HMNZ Ships Canterbury and Tui before qualifying as a Navigating Officer in 1992. He then served at sea as Navigating Officer of HMNZ Ships Southland, Wellington, Endeavour and Resolution.

In 1998, Commander Henry attended the Principal Warfare Officer course in Sydney qualifying as a Surface Warfare Officer. Returning to New Zealand, he spent two years as the Operations Officer of HMNZS Canterbury. During his service with the RNZN, Commander Henry saw operational service in Bougainville, Persian Gulf and Timor Leste. In 2001, Commander Henry commenced a two year exchange service with the Royal Australian Navy, serving as Warfare Officer in HMA Ships Arunta and Stuart.

In 2003, Commander Henry elected to join the Royal Australian Navy and after initial service at sea in HMAS Anzac, he joined the Maritime Headquarters as the Operations Coordinator. Returning to sea in 2005, Commander Henry served as Executive Officer of HMA Ships Melbourne and Adelaide. In 2008, Commander Henry joined the staff of Headquarters Joint Operations Command in Canberra working in the Global Plans arena, planning Australian Defence Force operations being conducted in the Middle East at that time.

In 2009, Commander Henry attended the Australian Command and Staff Course, gaining a Masters in Maritime Studies, before assuming the position of Officer Commanding of a training Squadron at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 2010. In January 2011, Commander Henry joined the RAN’s Strategic Headquarters as Deputy Director Capability Workforce Reviews, where he worked to ensure the workforce of the RAN meets the capability requirements in the future.

For the last six months of 2013 Commander Henry returned to sea as the Executive Officer of HMAS Sirius, before deploying to the Middle East Region in 2014 as the Australian Senior National Representative at the Combined Maritime Force HQ located in Bahrain. Immediately prior to joining HMAS Darwin, Commander Henry was the Adelaide Class Capability Support Manager. Commander Henry assumed command of HMAS Darwin in June 2015.
